Summary

We are seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator/Truck Driver to join our team at Harry Freeman & Son Ltd. The role is responsible for safely and efficiently operating a variety of equipment within the lumber yard and surrounding mill operations. The position includes but is not limited to, operating a skid steer, tractor and trailer, and dump truck, as well as performing general yard and material-handling duties, both physically and with the aid of the operating equipment.

Role responsibilities:

Operating safely a variety of heavy equipment to include skid steers, tractor and trailer and dump trucks, to move, load and unload ensuring the materials are provided in time for production

Securely loading and unloading trailers, ensuring bundles of lumber are stable for safe storage

Maintaining an organised area, clearing wood debris and by-products to ensure a safe, clean and tidy yard

Where skid steers do not reach, physically shoveling excess bark to ensure a safe and clear work-space

Shunting and moving trailers around the yard in a safe manner

Complete daily equipment inspections and report mechanical or safety concerns as they arise

Follow all company safety procedures, including required PPE and safe operating practices. If you see something, say something

Work cooperatively with other mill and yard employees to maintain an efficient operation

Carry out pre shift equipment inspections, ensuring any issues are immediately reported

Following all traffic safety and health and safety rules. Ensuring operation is within the regulations laid out in the Nova Scotia Provincial Standards

Handling materials appropriately and safely

Job conditions:

Work is primarily outdoors in a busy industrial lumber yard

Exposure to cold temperatures and winter weather conditions

Exposure to dust and warmer temperatures during the summer months

The yard is busy with many moving parts. Must be able to work around heavy equipment, moving vehicles, lumber, machinery and industrial noise in a demanding industrial environment

Regularly requires sitting, climbing into and out of equipment, and operating equipment for extended periods

The role is repetitive but essential to the efficient yard operations

Desirable Experience/knowledge requirements:

Physically demanding, must be physically fit and have the ability to shovel bark and lift/carry 50lbs (22Kgs) with two hands

Requires a good level of manual dexterity

Have good hand-eye coordination and depth perception to navigate safely around the yard and its many areas

Maintain productivity and quality while working safely

Must be able to work as part of a team, communicate with all levels of the organization and adapt quickly to change

Hold a valid CSA compliant forklift operator certification (Provincially recognised)

Problem-solving skills to detect issues and find solutions, ensuring the machinery works properly

Flexibility to work on any of the designated shift patterns and with reasonable advance notice, be willing to change onto a different shift pattern as and when the need arises

Must possess a valid driver’s license (preferably at least class 3), with a minimum of 2 years experience working with heavy equipment

Must have the appropriate visa status to work in Canada

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $24.39-$25.50 per hour

Expected hours: No more than 45.0 per week
