Structural Steel Estimator & Technical Sales

Precision Laser & Fabrication (PLF) is looking for an experienced Structural Steel Estimator / Technical Sales professional to support and grow our structural steel processing business.

This is a key customer-facing position responsible for reviewing structural projects, developing accurate quotations, identifying processing requirements, and working with customers and our production team to move opportunities from RFQ through quotation and into production.

We are looking for someone who understands structural steel—not simply someone who can enter quantities into an estimating system.

The successful candidate should be comfortable reviewing structural and shop drawings, understanding material and processing requirements, communicating directly with customers, and identifying practical solutions that allow PLF to manufacture projects efficiently and competitively.

Key Responsibilities

Structural Estimating & Technical Review

- Review structural drawings, shop drawings, BOMs, cut lists, DXF/DWG/NC1 files, and customer specifications.
- Prepare accurate and timely quotations for structural steel supply and processing.
- Identify requirements for beams, columns, HSS, angle, channel, plate, and other structural products.
- Determine required processing including cutting, coping, drilling, notching, marking, beveling, mitres, slots, holes, and related operations.
- Review material grades, sizes, lengths, quantities, tolerances, and processing requirements.
- Evaluate material utilization, processing time, outside services, and other cost considerations required to develop accurate estimates.
- Identify missing information, drawing conflicts, or unclear specifications before projects move into production.
- Review revisions and drawing changes and determine their impact on material, processing, pricing, and delivery.
- Maintain organized and accurate estimating records.

Customer & Sales Support

- Work directly with structural fabricators, contractors, OEMs, and industrial customers.
- Respond quickly and professionally to RFQs, revisions, technical questions, and customer requests.
- Follow up on quotations and actively pursue opportunities.
- Work with customers to understand their project requirements and recommend practical processing solutions.
- Identify opportunities to increase the amount of value-added processing PLF provides.
- Develop relationships with existing structural customers while helping identify and develop new opportunities.
- Support PLF's structural sales and revenue objectives.
- Maintain accurate quote,

customer, and opportunity information within PLF's ERP/CRM system.

Production & Internal Coordination

- Coordinate structural requirements with programming, purchasing, inventory, production, and sales.
- Ensure quoted processing requirements accurately reflect PLF's manufacturing capabilities.
- Work with operations to understand capacity, material availability, processing requirements, and realistic delivery expectations.
- Communicate revisions and customer changes clearly to the appropriate departments.
- Help resolve technical questions before and during production.
- Participate in quote reviews and provide feedback on wins, losses, margins, and estimating accuracy.
- Identify opportunities to improve estimating processes, quoting speed, material utilization, and overall workflow.

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate will bring a combination of structural steel knowledge, estimating ability, technical aptitude, and customer communication skills.

Experience in one or more of the following would be considered a strong asset:

- Structural steel estimating or detailing
- Structural steel fabrication
- Steel service centre or metal processing
- Beam/profile processing
- CNC structural processing equipment
- Structural drafting or detailing
- Steel purchasing or project coordination
- Technical sales within the steel or fabrication industry

Candidates should be comfortable:

- Reading and interpreting structural and shop drawings.
- Understanding structural steel shapes, grades, dimensions, and specifications.
- Working with DXF, DWG and/or NC1 files.
- Managing multiple RFQs and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Working accurately while maintaining a solid sense of urgency.
- Communicating directly with customers regarding technical and commercial requirements.
- Taking ownership of quotations from initial RFQ through follow-up.

Experience with Beamcut or similar structural CNC processing equipment/software is an asset but is not required for the right candidate.

The Person We're Looking For

Technical ability matters, but so does how you work.

We are looking for someone who is:

- Accountable – takes ownership and follows through.

- Detail-oriented – understands that small estimating mistakes can become expensive production problems.
- Responsive – recognizes that speed and communication matter when customers are waiting for quotations.
- Commercially minded – understands that estimating is ultimately about winning profitable work.
- Solutions-focused – looks for ways to manufacture the job rather than simply identifying obstacles.
- Collaborative – works effectively with customers, sales, programming, purchasing, and production.
- Driven to improve – continually looks for better ways to quote, process, and serve customers.

What PLF Offers

- A key role within a growing structural processing business.
- Exposure to a wide variety of structural and industrial projects.
- Modern CNC structural processing and metal fabrication technology.
- Opportunity to directly influence the growth of PLF's structural business.
- A collaborative environment where initiative, accountability, and results are valued.
