FOCAS Canada Community Learning Program | Ages 7–14
Position Overview
FOCAS Canada is seeking a positive and engaging English or Math Facilitator to support children and youth ages 7–14 in our Community Learning Program.
Our program uses practical, inclusive, and experiential learning to help young people strengthen academic skills, confidence, responsibility, communication, and a sense of belonging.
Position Details
Program Dates: September 25 – November 29
Program Length: 9 weeks
Wage: $16.00 per hour
Regular Hours: 4 hours per week
Additional Hours: 15 hours (3 five-hour event days)
Training: 4 hours of paid training
Key Responsibilities
The Facilitator will:
- Lead engaging English or Math activities for learners ages 7–14.
- Adapt activities for different ages, abilities, and learning needs.
- Create a welcoming environment where learners feel comfortable participating, asking questions, and making mistakes.
- Use practical, hands-on activities that connect learning to everyday life.
- Encourage teamwork, respectful communication, responsibility, and confident speaking.
- Prepare materials and activities before each session.
- Support learners individually and in small groups when needed.
- Work with the Program Coordinator and other facilitators to create consistent and positive programming.
- Respond appropriately to teasing, bullying, exclusion, or disrespectful behaviour and communicate concerns to the Program Coordinator.
- Help maintain a secure, organized, and inclusive learning space.
- Work as a team to tidy or clean up the space used for the Community Learning Program
English Focus
English Facilitators will help learners strengthen speaking,
listening, reading, writing, vocabulary, and communication skills. Activities may include storytelling, interviews, discussions, presentations, reading activities, writing projects, and practical communication tasks. The curriculum emphasizes helping ages 7–10 explain ideas and write organized paragraphs, while ages 11–14 progress toward discussions, presentations, academic vocabulary, text analysis, and multi-paragraph writing.
Math Focus
Math Facilitators will help learners build confidence using math in practical, meaningful situations. For ages 7–10, this includes operations, fractions, measurement, money, time, and data. Ages 11–14 build toward proportional reasoning, decimals, percentages, algebraic thinking, geometry, statistics, budgeting, and problem-solving.

- Enjoys working with children and youth ages 7–14.
- Is confident in English or Math.
- Can explain ideas clearly and patiently.
- Is dependable, organized, encouraging, and respectful.
- Can make learning active, interesting, and age appropriate.
- Values cultural diversity and creates opportunities for every learner to participate.
- Can work well as part of a team.
Experience working with children or youth is an asset.

Pay: $16.00 per hour
