Position Summary
The Epidemiologist provides leadership in population health assessment, surveillance, and applied research to inform public health decision making and program planning. Serving internal teams, community partners, and the broader public, the role analyzes complex data, identifies trends, and translates findings into actionable insights. The Epidemiologist supports the implementation of the Ontario Public Health Standards by producing timely, evidence informed assessments, evaluations, and knowledge products. Through collaboration, consultation, and methodological expertise, the role strengthens the organization’s ability to monitor emerging issues, reduce health inequities, and guide effective public health action.

- Enhances public health impact through collaborative research, partnerships, and engagement with interdisciplinary professionals.
- Ensures assessment and surveillance activities align with ethical standards, qualified practices, and public health mandates.

Core Responsibilities

- Conduct population health assessments and surveillance analyses to identify trends, inequities, and emerging issues.
- Integrate data from multiple sources to support comprehensive public health reporting and interpretation.
- Develop conceptual frameworks and analytical approaches to guide research, evaluation, and surveillance work.
- Prepare clear, accurate, and audience appropriate reports, briefs, and presentations on complex health issues.
- Provide evidence informed recommendations to support policy development, program planning, and quality improvement.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to support research, data sharing,



and knowledge exchange.
- Contribute to the evaluation of public health programs by designing measures, analyzing results, and interpreting findings.
- Support the implementation of the Ontario Public Health Standards through assessment, surveillance, and advisory work.
- Monitor demographic and population trends to inform service planning and anticipate emerging needs.
- Participate in professional networks and learning opportunities to maintain current knowledge in epidemiology and public health.
- Promote ethical data practices, confidentiality, and responsible use of information in all assessment activities.
- Identify knowledge gaps and contribute to developing tools, resources, and processes that strengthen organizational capacity.

Qualifications
Required

- Master’s Degree in Epidemiology or a Master’s of Public Health Degree with a specialization in Epidemiology
- At least two years of experience as an Epidemiologist in a population health or related setting.
- Several years of experience conducting data analysis using statistical software such as Stata, SAS, SPSS, EpiData, ArcGIS, and familiarity with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and other packages and programming languages currently used to collect, analyze, and report epidemiological data in Ontario.

Preferred

- In-depth knowledge of current issues and practices related to epidemiology, public health, and health outcomes.
- Comprehensive knowledge and demonstrated skills in epidemiological and statistical methods, applied research, and current related best practices.
- Demonstrated experience in using public health indicators.
- Familiarity with program planning and evaluation.
- Experience with Internet, intranet, and external data warehouse environments and their application to related projects and programs.

Addditional Requirements





- Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to summarize complex data into understandable, user-friendly explanations and formats for management, staff, and the general public
- Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to meet competing priorities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365, collaboration tools, and emerging technlogies, including AI-enabled tools

Hours of Work: 8:30am – 4:30pm with occasional evenings and weekends
Work Environment: Office, hybrid
Travel: Minimal – within city

Wage Grid: CUPE Wage Grid 8 $44.96 - $52.11 hourly

All WECHU staff are required to show proof of immunity to measles, mumps, rubella and varicella through immunization records or blood work AND provide a two-step Mantoux tuberculin skin test or one-step Interferon Gamma Release Assay test PRIOR to employment start.
A Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC) or a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) will be required as a condition of employment.
This position includes the option of hybrid work, whereby employees may be able to work remotely or from the office, based on departmental needs, job duties and personal work preferences. The successful candidate must reside within the province of Ontario and must be available to attend the office upon request.
