accountrain is a growing bookkeeping and accounting firm serving long-term clients across a range of industries, including not-for-profit organizations. We are looking for an experienced Bookkeeping Associate to join our contractor team in Ottawa.
This is a client-facing role requiring regular in-person work at client locations throughout Ottawa, often several days per week. You must live in the Ottawa area and have reliable transportation. This is not a remote bookkeeping position.
How the role works
All accountrain bookkeepers work as independent contractors. The role starts at approximately 20 hours per week and is expected to grow toward 35–40 hours per week as clients are assigned.
We are looking for someone who wants this to become their primary professional engagement, rather than supplemental work alongside another full-time position.
What you'll do
You'll manage bookkeeping for multiple clients, including:
- Full-cycle bookkeeping
- Accounts payable and receivable
- Bank and credit card reconciliations
- Payroll and government remittances
- HST filings
- Month-end journal entries and financial reporting
- Year-end preparation for external accountants
- Project/fund tracking for some not-for-profit clients
- Direct communication with clients
What we're looking for
This is a hands-on bookkeeping position. You should have:
- 2+ years of Canadian full-cycle bookkeeping experience
- Solid practical QuickBooks Online experience
- Experience managing multiple client files
- Canadian payroll and government remittance experience
- Solid Excel/spreadsheet skills
- Experience preparing files for year-end accountants
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of your files
Payroll and not-for-profit experience are assets.
You must be legally able to work as an independent contractor in Canada and be available during regular Canadian business hours.
Who does well at accountrain
We're looking for someone who is dependable, organized and takes pride in accurate work. You should communicate professionally with clients, work well independently, know when to ask questions, and care about doing the right thing.
Compensation
$30/hour – independent contractor
Hiring process
Our process includes a short introductory/behavioural interview, a technical bookkeeping interview, and a practical QuickBooks Online assessment.
We don't expect polished or lengthy application answers. Short, straightforward answers are preferred. Our interviews and practical assessment will verify the bookkeeping experience described in your application, so please focus on work you have personally performed.
We look forward to meeting you!
