Job Summary

Apex Company Inc. is seeking an experienced Production Lead to take ownership of field production across residential, multi-family, and commercial construction projects.

The Production Lead is responsible for converting project plans, schedules, scopes of work, budgets, drawings, and daily production targets into safe, organized, measurable field execution.

This is not solely a supervisory position.

The Production Lead must be capable of building and leading a high-performing field team, directing labour, coordinating subcontractors, solving construction problems, maintaining quality standards, controlling productivity, and ensuring that daily work supports the overall project schedule and budget.

Apex operates with a solid focus on Lean Construction methodology, measurable production, detailed documentation, continuous improvement, and accountability.

The successful candidate must therefore understand that successful construction management is not simply completing work—it is completing the correct work, in the correct sequence, to the required standard, within the planned labour hours, while continuously identifying ways to improve production.

Responsibilities

1. Field Production Leadership

Lead daily construction activities and maintain responsibility for field productivity.

Responsibilities include:

- Lead and supervise Apex employees, labourers, apprentices, tradespeople, and subcontractors.
- Build effective crews around project requirements.
- Assign workers based on skill level, task complexity, and production requirements.
- Clearly communicate daily production targets to the field team.
- Establish work areas, crew assignments, material staging, and equipment requirements before production begins.
- Monitor production throughout the day.
- Reallocate labour when production targets are not being achieved.
- Maintain discipline, organization, professionalism, and accountability on the job site.
- Ensure workers understand what they are building, how it should be built, and the expected production rate.
- Escalate significant production, quality, design, material, or schedule issues immediately.

The Production Lead is expected to know at all times:

- What work is being completed.
- Who is completing it.
- What the expected production rate is.
- Whether production is ahead or behind plan.
- What is preventing the team from working efficiently.
- What needs to happen next.

2. Lean Construction & Production Planning

Apex's production philosophy is based heavily on Lean Construction principles.

The Production Lead will be expected to continuously eliminate wasted time, labour, movement, materials, and rework.

Responsibilities include:

- Participate in weekly and look-ahead production planning.
- Break master schedules into practical weekly and daily field objectives.
- Identify constraints before work begins.
- Confirm that drawings, labour, materials, equipment, inspections, approvals, and predecessor activities are ready before crews are deployed.
- Sequence work to minimize downtime and trade interference.
- Identify opportunities for prefabrication, batching, staging, repetitive workflow, and standardized work.
- Reduce unnecessary worker movement and material handling.
- Establish logical material staging locations.
- Prevent workers from waiting for instructions, tools, materials, equipment, or preceding trades.
- Monitor planned versus actual production.
- Investigate reasons for missed production targets.
- Recommend corrective actions and process improvements.
- Participate in project post-mortems and lessons-learned reviews.

The expectation is to constantly ask:

Why are we doing it this way,



and is there a faster, safer, simpler, or more reliable way to achieve the same or better result?

3. Daily Planning & Execution

Before production begins each day, the Production Lead should have a clear execution plan.

This includes confirming:

- Daily scope.
- Crew assignments.
- Production quantities.
- Required labour hours.
- Materials.
- Tools.
- Equipment.
- Access requirements.
- Drawings.
- Layout requirements.
- Inspection requirements.
- Safety requirements.
- Dependencies on other trades.
- End-of-day production targets.

Daily work should be organized so workers can begin productive work immediately instead of waiting for direction.

4. Labour Management

The Production Lead must be capable of building and maintaining an effective field workforce.

Responsibilities include:

- Maintain access to qualified labourers and tradespeople.
- Recruit or recommend workers when additional manpower is required.
- Evaluate worker capabilities.
- Identify strong performers.
- Identify training requirements.
- Remove or recommend removal of consistently underperforming workers.
- Develop junior workers into increasingly productive members of the crew.
- Maintain appropriate crew sizes based on production requirements.
- Prevent overstaffing and unproductive labour.
- Track labour hours against completed quantities.
- Maintain professional standards of attendance, punctuality, workmanship, and behaviour.

The Production Lead should understand that adding workers does not automatically increase productivity.

Crew size must be matched to the work.

5. Schedule Management

The Production Lead is responsible for protecting the construction schedule at the field level.

Responsibilities include:

- Understand the master construction schedule.
- Understand critical path activities.
- Understand predecessor and successor relationships between divisions.
- Develop weekly and daily execution plans from the master schedule.
- Monitor actual progress against scheduled progress.
- Identify activities falling behind.
- Develop recovery plans where practical.
- Coordinate labour increases, overtime, sequencing changes, or alternative construction methods when necessary.
- Provide accurate field information to the Project Manager and Production Manager.

Schedule problems should be identified before they become project delays.

6. Cost & Productivity Control

Apex tracks project costs and performance by construction division.

The Production Lead must understand that field decisions directly affect project profitability.

Responsibilities include:

- Track labour hours by activity and division.
- Monitor actual labour usage against planned labour allowances.
- Track production quantities.
- Minimize unnecessary overtime.
- Reduce material waste.
- Prevent rework.
- Protect completed work.
- Identify productivity problems early.
- Assist management in understanding labour cost variances.
- Recommend more efficient construction methods where appropriate.

Examples of production measurements may include:

- SF installed per worker-hour.
- LF completed per worker-hour.
- Units installed per crew-day.
- Concrete placed per crew-day.
- Steel erected per crew-day.
- Drywall sheets installed per worker-day.
- Flooring installed per worker-day.
- Deficiency/rework rate.

Construction Knowledge

The Production Lead does not need to personally perform every trade, but must possess strong practical construction knowledge and understand how different divisions interact.

Experience should ideally include several of the following:

- Site preparation.
- Excavation.
- Concrete.
- Footings.
- Foundation systems.
- ICF.
- CMU.
- Slab-on-grade construction.
- Structural framing.
- Wood framing.
- Structural steel erection.
- Secondary steel installation.
- Roofing.
- Metal cladding.
- Building envelope.
- Insulation.
- Interior framing.
- Drywall.
- Flooring.
- Tile.
- Painting.
- Doors.
- Trim.
- Cabinetry.
- Interior finishing.
- Coordination of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing trades.

The Production Lead must be capable of reading drawings and understanding how architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical systems interact.

8. Drawing & Scope Interpretation

The Production Lead must be comfortable working directly from construction documentation.

Required capabilities include:

- Read architectural drawings.
- Read structural drawings.
- Interpret details and sections.
- Understand dimensions, elevations, and layouts.
- Understand specifications.
- Understand scopes of work.
- Understand exclusions and trade boundaries.
- Identify drawing conflicts.
- Identify missing information.
- Generate RFIs when clarification is required.
- Confirm field conditions against drawings before construction.
- Prevent crews from proceeding based on assumptions when critical information is missing.

9. Material & Equipment Coordination

The Production Lead must ensure that production is not interrupted because required resources were not planned.

Responsibilities include:

- Review upcoming material requirements.
- Confirm required materials are ordered sufficiently in advance.
- Verify deliveries.
- Confirm quantities.
- Inspect materials for damage or incorrect specifications.
- Plan material staging.
- Confirm required lifts, telehandlers, scaffolding, tools, compressors, generators, and specialty equipment are available.
- Coordinate movement of equipment between work areas.
- Prevent unnecessary rentals or idle equipment.
- Maintain awareness of material lead times.

10. Quality Control

The Production Lead is responsible for preventing deficiencies rather than discovering them after completion.

Responsibilities include:

- Understand Apex workmanship standards.
- Establish installation expectations before work begins.
- Inspect first installations before allowing repetitive work to continue.
- Perform regular quality inspections.
- Verify dimensions and layouts.
- Identify workmanship deficiencies immediately.
- Correct deficiencies before subsequent work conceals them.
- Protect finished work.
- Maintain deficiency lists.
- Verify corrections.
- Participate in turnover inspections.

The expectation is to build it correctly the first time.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Preferred qualifications:

- 7+ years of practical construction experience.
- 3+ years leading construction crews or projects.
- Experience supervising crews of approximately 5–20 workers.
- Experience coordinating multiple subcontractors.
- Experience working on residential, multi-family, commercial, or industrial projects.
- Strong experience in at least two major construction divisions.
- Proven ability to manage projects from drawings and schedules.
- Experience managing productivity and labour performance.

Strong candidates with exceptional field leadership capability may be considered without meeting every preferred experience requirement.

Pay: From $300.00 per day
