Tl’azt’en Nation is seeking a Dog Control & Community Animal Safety Coordinator for a 3-month term to support community safety, responsible dog ownership, and humane animal welfare within Nation communities.

The main focus of this role is to help reduce the number of roaming, abandoned, aggressive, and uncontrolled dogs on reserve by working with owners, community members, shelters, rescues, veterinary providers, and other organizations to coordinate safe and humane off-reserve placement where appropriate.

This is a hands-on, community-based role that requires strong communication, organization, good judgment, and the ability to work independently in sometimes difficult or sensitive situations.

What You’ll Do

- identify and document roaming, abandoned, aggressive, or uncontrolled dogs
- establish and maintain a community dog registry
- respond to dog-related complaints and safety concerns
- follow up with owners regarding secure containment and responsible ownership
- coordinate voluntary surrender of dogs
- arrange transportation and transfer to approved shelters, rescues, adopters, veterinary providers, or other authorized off-reserve placements
- build relationships with animal welfare and rescue organizations
- support access to spay/neuter, vaccination, microchipping, and veterinary services where available
- document dog bite incidents and other serious safety concerns
- track repeat complaints and owner follow-up
- maintain photographs, records, transfer information, and outcome documentation
- help develop practical dog control procedures, forms, notices, and tracking systems




- provide regular updates and reports to Management
- assist with community education around responsible dog ownership and animal welfare

Per-Dog Incentive

In addition to the hourly wage, the Coordinator will receive a $50 incentive for each eligible dog successfully and humanely removed from Tl’azt’en Nation reserve lands and transferred to an approved off-reserve placement.

To qualify for the incentive:

- the dog must be properly documented
- owner consent or other required authorization must be obtained where applicable
- the receiving shelter, rescue, adopter, veterinary provider, or other placement must be confirmed
- the dog must actually leave the reserve
- the transfer must be completed safely and humanely
- required records must be submitted and verified

No incentive will be paid for temporary relocation, undocumented removal, duplicate claims, abandonment, or any action that does not meet Tl’azt’en Nation’s safety and animal welfare expectations.

The Coordinator is not expected to personally capture or handle an animal where doing so would create an unreasonable safety risk.

Qualifications

We are looking for someone who has:

- high school diploma or equivalent
- valid driver’s licence
- comfort working around dogs
- strong communication and conflict-resolution skills
- good organization and record-keeping skills




- ability to work independently and use sound judgment
- ability to communicate respectfully with community members
- ability to deal with difficult, emotional, or sensitive situations
- ability to coordinate with shelters, rescues, veterinary providers, and other outside organizations
- ability to maintain confidentiality

Assets

The following would be considered assets:

- animal control or animal welfare experience
- veterinary, shelter, or rescue experience
- security, enforcement, compliance, or community outreach experience
- animal handling or behaviour training
- First Aid certification
- experience working in a First Nations or community-based environment

Compensation

$25.00–$30.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.

Plus a $50 incentive for each eligible dog successfully and humanely removed from reserve and transferred to an approved off-reserve placement.

Term

This is a full-time, 3-month term position.

Continuation beyond the initial term would be subject to operational needs, program results, funding, and approval.
