Job Purpose The Director of Credit is responsible for commercial and retail loan adjudication and the administration of the corporate loan portfolio within approved credit management policies, supporting Cascadia Credit Union’s (CCU) growth objectives while managing risk. Reporting directly to the Chief Risk Officer (CRO), with an indirect relationship to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Director of Credit provides independent and disciplined credit oversight, safeguards portfolio quality, and ensures adherence to approved risk appetite, lending policy, delegated authority, and regulatory obligations. The role leads credit adjudication within delegated authority, recommends decisions above authority, oversees lending operations and controls, coaches employees to strengthen consistent lending judgment, and ensures timely and accurate credit risk reporting to management, committees, the Board, and regulators.
Working closely with operations and member-facing teams, the Director of Credit supports a lending experience that is timely, clear, respectful, accessible, and consistent across channels. The role reduces avoidable hand-offs, duplicate requests, delays, and rework; promotes proactive updates and clear explanations of requirements, decisions, conditions, timelines, and alternatives; and supports coordinated service recovery when expectations are not met. By accomplishing the previous, the Director, Credit contributes to CCU’s growth and service excellence without compromising sound underwriting, fairness, privacy, policy, risk appetite, or regulatory requirements.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
· Provides strong second-line credit oversight across retail and commercial portfolios, independently challenging credit proposals and ensuring decisions align with Board-approved risk appetite, lending policies, delegated authorities and concentration limits.
· Adjudicates applications within delegated authority and provides clear, timely recommendations on exposures requiring higher approval, including material exceptions, complex structures and deteriorating credits.
· Administers the lending-authority framework, including limits, conditions, dual controls, exception protocols, periodic reviews and recommendations for changes based on competence, portfolio performance and risk appetite.
· Oversees end-to-end lending operations and control effectiveness, including documentation, security perfection, funding conditions, file quality, covenant monitoring, renewals, data integrity and timely escalation of deficiencies.
· Balances prudent credit oversight with an optimized member experience by establishing and monitoring service standards for responsiveness, turnaround times, communication quality, accessibility, consistency, and first-time completeness.
Simplifies sound processes; clarifies application, documentation, decision, and funding requirements; promotes proactive status updates and plain-language explanations; reduces unnecessary hand-offs, duplicate requests, delays, and monitoring turnaround times, rework, and avoidable member effort; and ensures timely escalation and coordinated service recovery when service commitments are not met, reducing friction.
· Works with the COO and lending leaders to improve workflow, capacity, technology and hand-offs while preserving the independence of credit judgment and escalation to the CRO.
· Monitors and manages [GS1] portfolio quality and emerging risk through delinquency, arrears migration, impaired loans, watch lists, risk-rating movement, policy exceptions, concentrations, collateral values, covenant compliance and stress indicators.
· Leads or coordinates corrective strategies for higher-risk and problem accounts, including enhanced monitoring, restructures, collections, recoveries, provisions and write-off recommendations.
· Maintains lending policies, procedures, underwriting standards, risk-rating practices and controls for retail, residential mortgage and commercial lending, and recommends changes in response to strategy, portfolio trends, regulation, audit findings and market conditions.
· Produces accurate, timely and decisive credit risk reporting for the CRO, COO, executive management, management credit committees and the Board, including risk appetite measures, trends, concentrations, exceptions, emerging risks and remediation status.
· Ensures complete, controlled and reconciled lending data supports statutory and regulatory submissions, including applicable personal and commercial loan data reporting, and coordinates responses to supervisory requests, audits and examinations.
· Coaches and develops lenders and lending support employees through case reviews, calibration, constructive challenge, training, feedback and competency assessment; promotes consistent underwriting and sound member conversations.
· Establishes and monitors operational and risk performance indicators, identifies root causes, assigns remediation, validates completion and reports unresolved or material issues promptly to the CRO.
· Maintains effective relationships with internal audit, finance, compliance, legal counsel, appraisers, insurers, brokers,
syndication partners and other stakeholders while protecting member information and managing conflicts of interest.
· Performs additional responsibilities aligned with organizational goals as assigned.
Skills & Attributes
· Demonstrated judgment, independence and courage to challenge constructively, escalate material concerns, and make balanced decisions in the credit union’s and members’ long-term interests.
· Advanced knowledge of retail, residential mortgage and commercial credit, including financial analysis, cash-flow assessment, loan structuring, collateral evaluation, risk rating, problem-loan management and portfolio analytics.
· Strong understanding of B.C. credit union regulation, governance, credit risk management, consumer protection, privacy, AML requirements and regulatory reporting expectations.
· Member-centred mindset with the ability to deliver clear, respectful and timely decisions while maintaining prudent underwriting and control standards.
· Proven ability to coach employees, calibrate judgment, give practical feedback and build capability across lending and operations teams.
· Excellent written and verbal communication, including concise credit recommendations, executive and Board reporting, policy writing, and translation of risk information into operational action.
· Solid process-management and continuous-improvement capability, with attention to service quality, efficiency, controls, data integrity, and sustainable execution.
· Ability to work effectively in a matrixed relationship, balancing direct accountability to the CRO with close operational partnership and dotted-line accountability to the COO.
· Advanced analytical, organizational and technology skills, including lending systems, spreadsheets, portfolio reporting and data-quality controls.
· High integrity, discretion, accountability, adaptability and commitment to continuous professional development.
Qualifications
- Minimum six (6) years of progressively responsible lending and credit risk experience, including substantial commercial and residential mortgage exposure
- Demonstrated experience with delegated lending authority, independent adjudication, portfolio monitoring, policy administration and problem-loan management
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in business, finance, accounting or a related discipline; an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
- Recognized credit, lending or risk-management education is preferred; ongoing professional development is expected
- Experience leading or coaching lending employees and preparing risk reporting for executives, committees or a Board is strongly preferred
