Position Overview
Power your future with Qualus in our Grid Engineering Canada business. We are seeking a Drafter Technician II to join our well-established drafting team. This role offers long-term workload stability, exposure to a diverse portfolio of transmission, distribution, substation, and renewable energy projects, and the opportunity to develop your technical capabilities within a collaborative, fast-paced setting.
You will support Transmission & Distribution projects, preparing and maintaining engineering drawings from markups, sketches, and design instructions provided by Engineers and Designers. Working with limited supervision from senior drafting staff, you will contribute to the successful delivery of transmission lines, substations, and distribution projects while expanding your knowledge of CAD tools, utility design standards, and engineering drawing production.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and revise engineering drawings and diagrams from markups and design direction provided by Engineers and Designers with limited supervision from senior drafting staff
- Develop drafting deliverables including 2D and 3D general arrangements, sections, elevations, bills of materials, cable, duct and bolt schedules, electrical room layouts, equipment layouts, grounding layouts, panel layouts, single-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring drawings, and overhead, crossing, and underground distribution drawings
- Apply company, client, and industry drafting standards to drawing packages and project deliverables
- Incorporate design markups and revisions into drawing packages using AutoCAD, MicroStation, or other approved CAD software
- Maintain drawing files, project records, and document management systems in accordance with company procedures
- Retrieve, enter, and update design information within drawings and project databases
- Perform basic quality checks to verify drawing accuracy, completeness, and compliance with drafting standards
- Coordinate with engineers, designers, and other project team members to ensure accurate and timely delivery of design documents
- Participate in design reviews, team meetings,
and continuous improvement initiatives
- Follow established safety, quality, and drafting standards in all work activities
- Support project delivery by completing assigned tasks within established schedules and budgets
Minimum Qualifications
- Diploma in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Technology, Drafting Technology, Engineering Design & Drafting Technology, or a related discipline from a recognized post-secondary institution
- 2-4 years of drafting experience, preferably supporting utility, industrial, infrastructure, or engineering projects
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar CAD software
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Working knowledge of engineering drawings, drafting principles, document control practices, and drafting standards
- Ability to interpret engineering markups and design instructions and accurately incorporate revisions into project deliverables
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality deliverables
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work effectively both independently and within a multidisciplinary team environment
- Experience with transmission, distribution, or substation projects is considered an asset
- Experience with Revit, ACC/Forma & BIM workflow (model setup, family creation, & class detection)
- Experience with Revit, Civil 3D, Inventor, GIS, Raster Design, AutoTURN, or other engineering design software is considered an asset
- Exposure to AutoCAD customization tools and programming languages such as LISP or VBA is considered an asset
