Division: Prairie Division, Calgary, Alberta
Position Type: Part-Time Contractor / "As-and-When-Needed"
Location: Field-based across Alberta and Saskatchewan
Keystone Environmental is one of Western Canada's leading environmental consulting firms, recognized as one of Canada's Top Small & Medium Employers for six consecutive years and certified as a “Great Place to Work” in 2024, 2025 and 2026.
Our Prairie Division has an immediate opening for an independent, field-ready Environmental Scientist or Engineer to join our newly established Prairie Division on a flexible, as and when needed basis.
About the Role
We are seeking an independent, "boots-on-the-ground" Environmental Scientist/Engineer to join our growing Prairie Division.
This is a highly flexible, project-by-project role ideal for a self-starter who thrives in the field and excels at running assessment programs with minimal oversight. Initially structured as an "as-and-when-needed" contract arrangement (averaging 10 to 30 hours per week depending on active project wins), this position offers significant long-term growth. There is excellent potential for this role to grow into a permanent, full-time position for the right candidate.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
As a core field lead, you will independently manage and execute assessment projects from start to finish:
Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs):
- Conduct thorough historical research and regulatory database reviews.
- Execute comprehensive site reconnaissance.
- Prepare and draft technical Phase I ESA reports.
Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs):
- Manage on-site field coordination and logistics.
- Provide drilling and excavation oversight.
- Perform systematic soil, groundwater, and soil vapour sampling.
Reporting & Technical Writing:
- Draft clean, technically defensible field notes, analytical data tables, and draft Phase I/II assessment reports.
Field & Travel Operations:
- Travel to various client and site locations across Alberta and Saskatchewan (includes regional driving and occasional short-duration flights).
Must-Have Requirements
- Experience: 3 to 5 years of hands-on environmental consulting experience. Candidates must be comfortable leading assessments and running field programs independently without the need for active supervision.
- Education: A College Diploma or Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Environmental Science, Geology, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Field Competency: Proven, demonstrated experience supervising drillers, coordinating contractors, and independently executing soil and groundwater sampling programs.
- Technical Writing Skills: Solid ability to compile field data, build accurate tables, and author high-quality draft reports.
- Safety & Compliance:
Valid standard industry safety tickets (e.g., H2S Alive, First Aid, CSTS/BSO) and a clean driver's abstract with access to a reliable, site-ready vehicle.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Designation: Active status or eligibility for registration as a Professional Agrologist (P.Ag.), Professional Geologist (P.Geol.), Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), Environmental Professional in-training (EPt), or Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) – including all corresponding "in-training" levels.
