Stick People Solutions is conducting a search for a Financial Controller on behalf of a Calgary-based EPCM in the energy sector.
Role Summary The Financial Controller will provide leadership, vision and management to support the organization in reaching its strategic, financial and cultural goals. The successful candidate will act as the chief financial spokesperson for the organization and will oversee all financial accounting operations, internal controls, and core human resources functions. The ideal candidate blends rigorous financial oversight with strong people operations to maintain an efficient, stable, and legally compliant workplace.
Job Duties
- Work with the President on the strategic vision including fostering and cultivating stakeholder relationships
- Assist in the development and negotiation of contracts
- Oversee the accounting team
- Oversee the preparation of accurate monthly and annual financial statements
- Assist in updating the companies’ strategic business plans along with management
- Prepare annual budgets and track spending variances and cash flow forecasting
- Maintain and optimize a system of internal controls to protect assets and ensure accuracy
- Negotiate commercial and professional insurance policies annually
- Lead and train the accounting department and supervise payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable and general ledger, while ensuring proper segregation of duties
- Monitor all banking activities
- Ensure adherence to legal regulations, tax filings and accounting standards while maintaining internal controls to prevent fraud or errors
- Manage the administrative team including HR, Admin, HSE and IT by planning, organizing, implementing and directing these groups, while fulfilling an interpersonal role, informational role and decision-making role where appropriate
- Benefits Management: Oversee the HR Coordinator with respect to the administration of the corporate benefits programs (health, wellness, and retirement plans), serving as the primary vendor contact and evaluating annual plan structures
- Investigate and advise on cost effective benefit plans and other fringe benefits
- Ensure company practices adhere to local employment standards, labor laws, health and safety regulation, and tax requirements for employee benefits along with HR Coordinator
- Assists in planning company compensation strategy
- Ongoing collaborate with executive teams to design competitive compensation and bonus structures that align with financial targets
- Collaborate with IT and monitoring the Systems group, while fulfilling an interpersonal role, informational role, and decision making role where appropriate
- Oversee and manage the Systems group’s objectives, and budgets while being a conduit to facilitate their efforts
Job Specific Goals

Experience Required
- Certified Professional Accountant designation (CPA)
- 10 years’ of progressive experience in financial management, accounting, human resources and leadership roles
- Experience with both Canadian and US accounting is essential
- Strong preference will be given to applicants with previous experience within engineering or construction environments
Qualifications
- Solid Accounting and Finance skills, including a solid understanding of accounting principles and financial management
- Experience with financial statements and financial reporting, with the ability to prepare, review, and interpret financial documents
- Well-developed analytical skills to assess financial performance, identify trends, and support data-driven decisions
- Proficiency with financial software and tools (e.g., accounting systems, spreadsheets, reporting tools).
- Knowledge of applicable accounting standards and regulatory requirements
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities
- Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to present financial information to non-financial stakeholders
Work Environment
- Full-time position
- Office-based in downtown Calgary
- 100% time at the office for the first 3 months with the ability to graduate to a hybrid schedule (4 days in office, 1 day remote) at a later date
