Operations Manager
Overview The Muskoka Roastery Coffee Company is on a path to become the #1 Canadian premium coffee brand. Our strong volume growth requires a significant scaling-up of our manufacturing and technology base.
We are seeking an Operations & Commercialization Manager to lead our Operations team, delivering the daily KPI’s, while planning and commercializing our new equipment investment program.
This multi-faceted role covers all aspects of Operations including procurement, logistics, production planning, labour deployment, skills development, ERP systems, and project planning/management. The role has two direct reports and a team of twelve. This role reports to the Director of Finance & Operations.

Responsibilities
Procurement
- Provide leadership to direct reports to ensure that material inflows are cost-optimized, on time and consistently meeting quality specs.
- Build strong supplier relationships and challenge status quo to ensure MRCC sourcing is leading edge.
- Manage sourcing risk in a proactive fashion.
Production Planning & Inventory
- Provide leadership to direct reports to ensure that forecasting/planning models and production schedules consistently meet service (OSCOT) targets, within established inventory parameters.
- Provide leadership to both direct reports to optimize labour utilization, maximize productivity and establish a regular, repeatable production pattern.
- Provide leadership to both direct reports to optimize available space, to maximize productivity as well as safety.
ERP & Systems
- Full ownership of delivery of all operational metrics, data and reports to all stakeholders – on time and to a very high quality standard.
- Operations KPI’s are clearly established and the company depends on the team to hit the targets and for performance to be very transparent.
Technology
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives across the Operations team.
- Identify opportunities to introduce technology to improve operational efficiency, productivity, and workflow.
- Use data and analysis to support recommendations – fact based decision-making.
Commercialization & Equipment Implementation
- Lead all aspects of the defined commercialization projects, including pre-planning, delivery, installation, commissioning and integration into new workflows.
- Pre-planning includes working with the suppliers to ensure that all specs are understood and aligned with our facility. Also includes space preparation.
- Lead the overall project critical path(s) to hit defined start-up targets dates.
- Work with suppliers, contractors, and internal teams to ensure services are ready before equipment arrives and that the facility is ready to receive the new equipment.
- Coordinate the service providers to install, testing, certify and integrate the new machinery into production.
- Develop operational processes and documentation required to bring new equipment into regular production.
- Design the training program to ensure that production staff have the skills to operate the new equipment.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with finance, quality, marketing, and sales colleagues to support overall business performance.
- Contribute to new initiatives that build brand value such as new products, quality improvements, packaging changes or new channel entry.
Leadership This position has two salaried employees as direct reports, and ten hourly employees in process operator, material handling and pick ‘n pack roles. The salaried staff are a Senior Roastery Manager who manages all hourly employees,
and an Enterprise Planning Manager who covers all supply chain and planning roles.
This position is expected to lead, inspire and motivate the Operations team, while becoming a trusted, reliable group that delivers targets and KPI’s. The expectation bar for quality, service and productivity is consistently being raised and the role of this individual is to ensure that the team is always ready and able to clear that bar.
The successful candidate will also have the maturity, communication skills and confidence necessary to build constructive relationships with strategic suppliers. Both to explore opportunities for innovation and also to resolve issues before they have any negative impact on our business.
Qualifications
- Diploma or degree from a post-secondary institution.
- Experience in operations, manufacturing, logistics and operational project management.
- Experience supporting equipment installation, operational upgrades and production improvements.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent communication skills – verbal and written.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong computer skills including Microsoft Excel.
- Comfortable working with operational data.
- Other languages (French, Spanish, Mandarin) would be an asset.
