Reporting to the Manager, Parks, Forestry & Trails, and under the general direction of the Supervisor and/or designate operates various pieces of equipment and perform work assignments related to the Turf & Pest Management Programs.
Responsibilities: Perform and participate in all related turf and pest management duties including but not limited to:
- Operate, maintain various units of equipment and provide input into the purchase of new equipment - Preform all work-related activities including assisting with monitoring and analysis - Communicate with staff and the public on all aspects of the program - Process work orders, associated paperwork and work assignments accurately in accordance with established standards and timelines - Perform all general parks facility and grounds maintenance activities and provide input into the development and improvement of safety procedures and work practices - Receive and unload materials and supplies as required - Perform snow and ice removal during the winter months, including operating equipment and manually shoveling and salting sidewalks, parking lots, roadways, etc., as required - Work in accordance with City of Oshawa safe work standards, the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, and the Branch’s Work Performance, Quality Standards and Code of Ethics - Perform various duties related to the Operations Services Winter and Summer Call Board - Perform other related duties as assigned Requirements:
- Two (2) year Horticultural Technician Diploma and have five (5) years relevant operational experience and knowledge in Integrated Pest Management and Turf Management - Possess Pesticide License (Landscape) and willing to obtain IPM certification - Demonstrated ability to operate and maintain turf related equipment designated by the department and related to the responsibilities of the division - Must be able to perform injections for the Emerald Ash Borer program, including preparing injections, cleaning as well as recording and assessments of tree health - Working knowledge of all related park equipment such as trucks,
grass-cutting equipment, tractors with 3 point hitch for use with aerators, overseeders, fertilizer spreaders, renovator, rototiller, etc.
- Willing and able to train and obtain certification on various units of Type A equipment specific to the section and willingness to obtain selected components of Type “B” equipment (CUPE Local 250 Collective Agreement, Appendix A-1) - Good communication skills and ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions - Ability to comprehend and prepare technical data, forms and records relevant to the job - Must be able to calibrate and set equipment for proper application rates of desired products such as vinegar, fertilizer, seed, corn gluten and TreeAzin - Good interpersonal skills to discuss routine information courteously with colleagues and the general public - Ability to deal tactfully with the public on issues of an extremely sensitive nature i.e. pesticides - Able to climb, lift and move heavy items (maximum 80 lbs./approx. 36 kgs.) and capable of performing the work assigned in a secure manner - Working knowledge and understanding of, and ability to apply safety policies, standards, and legislation (Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS), and able to use appropriate safety apparatus - Able to work with minimal supervision (act independently as required) or constructively in a team environment exercising good judgement and safe and appropriate practices and procedures - Possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Ontario Driver's License (Class DZ) in good standing, with no demerit points, and be able to pass the Corporation's tests for motor vehicle operation - Willing and able to work evenings, weekends, holidays as required, due to the nature of the Parks and Facilities Operations - Must be able to work on the Operations Services Winter and Summer Call Board - Willing and able to train in related areas of work in order to fulfil various assignments As a condition of employment, the City of Oshawa will require successful candidates to undergo a Criminal Records and Judicial Matters check and an employment medical.
