- Salary Range: $33 – $38 per hour
- Working Hours: 40 hrs/week, Mon–Fri, 7:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. (incl. 30-min unpaid lunch); flexibility for overtime as required

ABOUT THE ROLE:

Reporting to the Cemetery Director or Delegate, the Superintendent is a hands-on people leader who plans, coordinates, and supervises day-to-day operations at Notre-Dame Cemetery. The Superintendent leads, trains, and manages a crew of maintenance staff, assigning work, coaching performance, and building a safe and respectful team environment, while also coordinating burials, overseeing grounds and equipment, and ensuring standardization and compliance across parish cemeteries. This is a working supervisor role that combines direct people leadership with hands-on grounds and operations management.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

People Leadership & Team Management

- Lead, supervise, and coordinate a crew of cemetery maintenance staff, assigning daily jobs and work areas and prioritizing weekly work
- Hire, train,



and onboard staff in collaboration with Archdiocese People & Culture; provide ongoing coaching and direction to the team
- Manage staff performance and attendance, addressing issues promptly and fairly, and conduct employee evaluations in collaboration with management

Cemetery Operations & Grounds Maintenance

- Oversee grass cutting, trimming, landscaping, general grounds maintenance, and seasonal work such as spring/fall cleanup, snow removal, and winter preparation
- Assign and oversee lot leveling, marker installation, road repairs, foundation work, and monument work; inspect grounds, roads, monuments, lots, and equipment
- Operate equipment as required, ensure trucks, mowers, trimmers, and other equipment are protected and well maintained, and arrange supplies and repairs

Burial Coordination & Administration

- Coordinate burials and liaise with administrative staff, families, and funeral homes with discretion, tact, and diplomacy
- Assist with burials when needed and ensure services are conducted respectfully and in accordance with cemetery procedures
- Maintain accurate records and communicate effectively with administrative staff on scheduling and logistics

Budget & Regulatory Compliance

- Manage approved budgets and track expenditures for cemetery operations




- Ensure compliance with Ontario Cemetery Law, Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO) regulations, and Order supplies and arrange equipment repairs, ensuring cost-effective use of resources

Standardization Across Parish Cemeteries

- Conduct assessments of parish cemeteries and standardize operational practices across sites
- Provide guidance, training, and hands-on support to parish cemetery staff
- Support the Director in developing consistent policies and procedures across all Archdiocese cemeteries

QUALIFICATIONS:

- College diploma or equivalent; minimum two years of experience in cemetery administration/management, or equivalent supervisory experience in construction, landscaping, grounds maintenance, or municipal work.
- Proven experience leading, training, and managing the performance of a crew or team; previous cemetery experience is an asset but not required
- Knowledge of Ontario Cemetery Law and BAO regulations; comfortable working outdoors and operating grounds equipment; proficiency in standard office software
- Bilingual in English and French (oral and written); valid driver's licence; recent criminal background check/federal security clearance required
