Patrol Constables are uniform front-line first responders who respond to emergentsituations, protect life and property and conduct investigations. Patrol Constablescommonly work within a trauma exposed environment. Their duties includemanaging critical incident scenes, conducting investigations, writing detailedreports, identifying and managing witnesses and victims, performing emergencyfirst aid or facilitating access to medical treatment, and liaising with partneragencies. Patrol Constables work to identify and prevent crime, and apprehendoffenders. They keep the peace and enforce laws of the Criminal Code ofCanada, as well as other Federal and Provincial legislation, and MunicipalBylaws.
- Uniform position, may include plain clothes work as required
- High visibility focused enforcement of Criminal Laws, Federal andProvincial Statutes and Municipal Bylaws
- Conduct patrols by foot or vehicle and liaise with diverse community members
- Work collaboratively with other VicPD teams to develop plans and strategiesto address operational priorities, solve and prevent crime
- Work 12-hour rotational shifts (two day shifts, followed by two night shifts, followed by four days off)
- Effectively communicate with members of the community and possess strongde-escalation skills.
- Where reasonable and necessary, use proportional force in accordance withVicPD Policy,
the Criminal Code and the National Use of Force Framework toapprehend offenders and protect the public.
- Conduct Person / Vehicle / Traffic control as required
- Assist the BC Coroner with sudden death investigations
- Achieve and maintain qualifications as per Department Policy and ProvincialPolicing Standards
Mandatory Qualifications:
- Minimum age 19 years
- No criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted
- Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident status
- Possess a valid class 5 BC Driver’s License
- Valid Standard First Aid/CPR certificate
- Visual acuity: unaided vision of not less than 20/40 in one eye and 20/100 in the other. Pass colour vision test
- Hearing requirements: no greater loss than 30db in both ears in the 500 - 3000 Hz range
- High school graduation or equivalent

- Self-motivated and possess strong interpersonal skills
- Post-secondary education (two years preferred)
- Demonstrated commitment to the community through volunteer experience
- Able to work effectively in a solo and team setting
- Ability to effectively communicate and liaise with various community members
- Ability to solve and manage complex problems
- Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with members of our diverse communities including youth, unhoused persons, marginalized and high-risk individuals
