Mandate The Director, Experiential Learning provides strategic, operational, and academic direction for Gustavson’s Experiential Learning (EL) portfolio. Reporting to the Director, Business Operations and partnering with the Associate Dean, Teaching & Learning, the role leads the vision, design, delivery, and evaluation of experiential opportunities that prepare students for an increasingly complex and interconnected world.
The Director ensures EL is rigorous, relational, community-connected, and aligned with UVic’s strategic priorities and Gustavson’s commitment to responsible and inclusive leadership. The role advances a transformative pedagogical approach that integrates Land-based, community-engaged, and industry-informed learning.
Working collaboratively with job-related Associate Deans, faculty, staff, students, and external partners, the Director oversees high-quality experiential programming, effective operations, resource management, and the integration of Indigenous and Land-based approaches. The position also builds key partnerships and provides responsible management and reporting of experiential learning–related funds.
Objectives
- Establish a School-wide experiential learning strategy that enhances student growth, skill development, and readiness for a complex world, while advancing the School’s strategic priorities and contributing to the University’s broader mission, values, and institutional goals.
- Strengthen Gustavson’s relationships with business leaders, not-for-profit organizations, Indigenous partners, and community groups to create high-value experiential opportunities.
- Advance meaningful Land-based learning pathways and support Gustavson faculty and students with relational and reflective practices grounded in Indigenous ways of knowing.
- Steward experiential learning funds (e.g., Catalyst Fund, Future Leaders’ Lab) and oversee resources, reporting, and program sustainability to ensure effective and accountable delivery.
- Enhance visibility of experiential learning internally and externally through strong partnerships, reporting, communication, and collaboration.
- This position may require work off-campus and at irregular hours to support community-engaged learning, Land-based learning, events, and partnership development.
This position requires a level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a graduate degree in Administration, Education, Leadership or other appropriate discipline plus 5-7 years of relevant teaching, experiential learning and program leadership/management experience. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered. Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Include

- Ability to innovate and implement new frameworks, protocols, and pedagogical approaches, supporting program evolution and institutional goals.
- Strong understanding of higher education teaching and curriculum development, including integrating experiential and student-centered learning approaches.
