Your Opportunity
We have an exciting chance in our program for an experienced Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) within the Alberta Kidney Care – North (AKC-N) program. As a member of the multi-disciplinary team, the Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care. Decisions are made in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team. The LPN provides patient and family centered care to acute and chronic renal failure patient populations.
The Licensed Practical
Nurse will practice within the guidelines and philosophy of AKC-N. You will be encouraged and expected to work at your full scope of practice and to perform a variety of nursing duties in accordance with current policies and nursing care standards. You may have the opportunity to work in other city and rural satellite dialysis units within AKC-N. Please note, candidates who are chosen for an interview will be contacted by email. This position is based in 5B1 Hemodialysis at the University of Alberta Hospital.

As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you are part of an interprofessional health care team, utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making skills. You will be guided by your education, experience, and demonstrated skill level, in alignment with applicable legislation, standards of practice, policies, and procedures. Required Qualifications
Completion of an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse education program. Active, or eligible for, registration and a practice permit as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides of Alberta (CLHA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Additional Required Qualifications
Current (within 12 months) hemodialysis experience.
Physical
Assessment, IV Therapy and Medication Administration course required. Minimum 2 years recent (within 2 years) Adult Acute Care experience required. Successful candidate must be able to lift 40lbs (18kg). Basic computer skills are required. The AKC-N program requires candidates to complete/pass hemodialysis training. Hemodialysis training is held in Edmonton or Red Deer depending on availability. Hemodialysis orientation will take 6 weeks: 4 weeks of on-unit training and 2 weeks of buddy shifts (or equivalent hours). A passing mark of 80% on the final exam and satisfactory performance during clinical component is required to move on to buddy shifts.
Advanced Practice
Standards 3-10 & 16-17 required. These can be found in the Competency Profile for Licensed Practical Nurses – 5th Edition on the CLPNA website.
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to candidates with minimum 1 year medical-surgical nursing experience within the last 2 years. Recent experience in acute and chronic hemodialysis, nephrology nursing.
