Communications & Engagement Lead

Contract: 6 months, with possibility of extension
Full-Time: 5 days per week
Location: Fully remote within Canada, with the possibility of occasional travel for meetings and events
About CAPA The Canadian Association for the Practice of Architecture (CAPA) is a national non-profit industry association focused exclusively on advancing the business interests of architectural practices in Canada. CAPA works to improve the business conditions in which architectural practices operate and strengthen the long-term success and competitiveness of the sector.
About the Role
CAPA is seeking an experienced and strategic Communications & Engagement Lead to help build the communications, brand, and member engagement capacity of a growing national organization.
Reporting to and working closely with the Executive Director, this is a communications-first role for an exceptional writer and editor who can think strategically while also executing the work. The successful candidate will also bring strengths in content development, branding, digital communications, and member engagement.
As part of a small team, the role will also contribute to broader organizational priorities, with up to approximately 20% of the position dedicated to administrative, membership, and committee support as required.
Key Responsibilities

Strategic
Communications & Content
- In line with CAPA's strategic plan, develop and implement CAPA’s communications strategy and annual communications plan in alignment with the organizational strategic plan, advocacy priorities, membership objectives, and organizational activities.
- Lead the writing, editing, and development of high-quality content across CAPA’s communications, including member updates, newsletters, website and social media content, reports, presentations, announcements, speaking points, advocacy materials, and publications.
2. Brand, Digital Presence & Profile
- Co-develop and steward CAPA’s brand, visual identity/graphics, online persona, and organizational voice, ensuring a strong and consistent presence across communications, channels, and audiences.
- Lead the ongoing development and management of CAPA’s website, social media, digital communications, templates, presentations, graphics, and other branded materials.
3. Member Engagement & Organizational Development
- Work with the Executive Director to develop and implement approaches to member communications and engagement, ensuring CAPA provides timely, relevant, and valuable information and opportunities to its members.
- Contribute to strategic and organizational planning, helping translate CAPA’s priorities into communications and engagement strategies, work plans, projects, and measurable activities.
4. Project, Event & Organizational Support
- Manage communications and engagement projects from planning through delivery, coordinating timelines, contributors, materials, events, and other requirements.
- Support CAPA meetings, committees, events, advocacy activities, membership administration, organizational systems, and other initiatives as required (20%).
Candidate Profile The ideal candidate is a strategic, creative, and highly organized communications professional who is comfortable both shaping direction and executing the work. They will bring strength in:
- Writing, Communications & Brand: Exceptional writing and editing skills, strong editorial judgment, and the ability to develop compelling content/visuals and steward a consistent organizational brand across channels and audiences.
- Strategy & Execution: The ability to translate organizational priorities into effective communications and engagement strategies, work plans, projects, and deliverables—and independently move them forward.
- Member & Stakeholder Engagement: Strong relationship-building and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with members, senior leaders, Boards and committees, partners, and other stakeholders.
The successful candidate will thrive in a small, collaborative, and evolving organization where priorities can shift quickly, and individuals have significant ownership over their work.
Qualifications & Experience
- Approximately five or more years of relevant professional experience in communications, marketing, public relations, member engagement, or a related field, supported by relevant post-secondary education or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated excellence in writing and editing, communications strategy, brand development and stewardship,
digital communications, and member or stakeholder engagement, with experience producing high-quality content across multiple formats and channels.
- Robust project management, organizational, interpersonal, and digital skills, with the ability to independently manage multiple priorities and work effectively with senior leaders, members, Boards and committees, partners, and other stakeholders.
Assets
- Experience working within architecture, design, engineering, construction, real estate, or the broader built-environment sector, or within a national association, member-based organization, non-profit, or advocacy organization.
- Experience with public affairs, government relations, advocacy or policy communications, major organizational publications, graphic design, photography, video, or other creative communications.
- Experience with platforms such as WordPress, Mailchimp, Microsoft 365, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, and social media management tools.
- French-language proficiency and/or experience working in a bilingual national organization would also be considered an asset.
