The University of the Fraser Valley Student Union Society (SUS) is a BC Not-For-Profit Society representing and serving UFV students. The Society manages the Student Union Building and facilitates services such as the UFV U-PASS, food services, and the student health and dental plan. SUS also supports an active community by organizing events and providing wellness and developmental programming.

As the official representative body of UFV students, our mission is to be an inclusive community that provides high-quality, accessible programs and services. We are the unified voice advocating on behalf of student interests in the UFV community, ensuring each student has opportunities to thrive.

Work Schedule: Minimum of 4 hours per month

Location: Abbotsford Campus

POSITION DESCRIPTION The Indigenous Representative acts as an oversight group for the Executives and Executive Director, and oversees the high-level direction of the Society. This position is not involved in day-to-day operations, administration, or management processes. They meet once a month to review reports and discuss and direct the long-term plans that impact students.

This position must be filled by an eligible Indigenous UFV student who will be enrolled in a minimum of one three-credit course in both the Fall and Winter semesters.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES OF THE INDIGENOUS REPRESENTATIVE The Indigenous Representative in conjunction with other Executives, has responsibility for a variety of functions, including but not limited to the following:

- Making decisions about the financial, legal, and ethical obligations that the organization must fulfill;
- Acting honestly, in good faith, and in the best interests of the Society;
- Looking to, and supporting the long-term interests of SUS;




- Treating individual stakeholders affected by the Society’s actions equitably and fairly;
- Making sound decisions while considering the best interests of Members, employees, creditors, students, governments, and the environment;
- Ensuring there is no conflict of interest while making decisions;
- Doing what is in the best interests of the Society in any particular situation and;
- Ensuring compliance with bylaws and legal filings.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES OF THE EXECUTIVE The Indigenous Representative has specific responsibility for a variety of functions, including but not limited to the following:
- Being prepared for and attending board meetings;
- Preparing verbal reports to present to the Board;
- Supporting SUS Executives and holding them accountable;
- Acting honestly and in good faith, exercising oversight with diligence, prudence, and the care that reflects you are acting in the best interests of the Society;
- Behaving respectfully and professionally toward other board members, student union staff, and members both publicly and privately (this includes all forms of media such as news articles and social media platforms);
- Speaking freely at Board Meetings, but once the Board has made a decision, the Director must unequivocally support those decisions;




- Recognizing and respecting the fact that the President is the primary spokesperson for The Society and is the only person authorized to speak for the Board or the Society and;
- Acquiring a working knowledge of the BC Societies Act, the SUS Bylaws and Policies, Robert’s Rules, and any other items governing the business of the Society.

COMPENSATION: Volunteer; includes benefits such as priority registration and letter of recommendation from SUS President at end of term.
