Purpose

Reporting to the General Counsel, the purpose of this job is to provide legal representation and advice for all levels of the Calgary Board of Education (CBE). Responsibilities include identifying and analyzing legal issues, drafting key documents, presenting clear recommendations, and ensuring legal advice supports compliance with applicable legislation and CBE governance documents.

Accountability

This job is accountable for:

- Providing legal advice on a broad range of issues related to labour law, employment law, and human rights law (and such other areas as may arise).
- Working closely with CBE service units to identify, assess, and evaluate legal outcomes of major decisions impacting the organization and to write legal opinions and memos which may require extensive research of legislation and case law.

Major responsibilities

Under the direction of General Counsel (or designate):

- Provide legal advice to support the work of CBE Human Resources regarding workforce legal issues.
- Gather required information, research legislation and case law, and prepare legal opinions and memos.
- Liaise with external counsel and CBE service units to manage the CBE’s participation in workforce litigation or workforce administrative law processes.
- Respond to legal processes and represent the organization’s position in workforce litigation and administrative law processes.
- Act as liaison with the public and outside agencies on legal matters concerning the CBE.
- Provide legal review of policies and procedures.
- Draft and review sensitive correspondence content for potential reputational ramifications.




- Perform other related responsibilities as assigned to meet organizational goals and objectives.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

- Law or Juris Doctor degree.
- Qualified to practice law in Alberta.
- Five to fifteen years specialized experience in at least two of the following areas of law: labour law, employment law, human rights law.
- Familiarity with the Alberta Human Rights Act, Education Act, Employment Standards Code, Labour Relations Code, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Protection of Privacy Act and other legislation relating to work of the Calgary Board of Education.
- Understanding of best practice and applicable case law regarding workplace investigations.

Preferred Education and Experience
- Experience providing labour law and employment law legal advice and support to a large public sector organization.

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies

- Robust interpersonal and analytical skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; capable of communicating with a wide variety of audiences.
- Ability to work effectively in both team and independent settings.
- Ability to work cross-functionally.
- Demonstrated legal research skills.
- Proven ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and efficiently.
- Confidence to interact independently with all levels within and outside the Calgary Board of Education.
- Demonstrated professionalism and diplomacy in carrying out job responsibilities.
- Personal suitability.

Full-time permanent

Salary: $147,700 to $225,100 annually

FTE: 1.0, 35 hours per week
