Role Description<

The Roads Operator is a full-time, on-site position located in Cochrane, AB, responsible for the day-to-day operation, maintenance, and repair of municipal roads and related infrastructure. This role typically includes operating light and heavy equipment (such as trucks, loaders, or sweepers), performing road surface repairs, patching, and minor construction work, and assisting with snow and ice control, sanding, and seasonal clean-up activities.

The Roads

Operator monitors road conditions, installs and maintains signage and barricades as needed, and follows established safety procedures and municipal standards. Daily tasks also involve completing work orders, performing basic equipment inspections, reporting hazards or damage, and supporting other Public Works team members as required.



The role requires working outdoors in varying weather conditions, sometimes on evenings, weekends, or during emergency call-outs.

Qualifications

- Strong skills in operating and maintaining light and heavy equipment used in road construction and maintenance, with a focus on safe, effective operation.
- Knowledge of road maintenance practices, including pothole repair, grading, snow and ice control, and basic drainage and surface repair techniques.
- Understanding of workplace health and safety regulations, safe work procedures, and traffic control methods when working on or near public roadways.
- Ability to read and follow work orders, basic maps, and written instructions, and to complete clear, accurate documentation and reports.
- Effective teamwork and communication skills, including the ability to collaborate with supervisors, coworkers, and other departments in a respectful, service-oriented manner.
- Physical ability to perform manual labor, work outdoors in wide-ranging weather, lift moderate weights, and safely perform tasks on uneven surfaces and around moving equipment.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record; a commercial or air brake endorsement is an asset.
- Previous experience in municipal public works, road construction, or a related field is preferred; relevant technical training or certification is considered an advantage.
