NEW POSTING - Senior Electrical Engineer (High Voltage / Power)Calgary, AB Home Full-time Aug 24, 2026
Senior Electrical Engineer - High Voltage / Power
Lead power-system work from the first study and single line through construction and energization.
1 opening | Calgary hybrid | Employee or contractor | Industrial client sites
DEG engineering is expanding its electrical capability and is looking for a senior engineer who understands how generation, substations, protection, and industrial distribution fit together as one operating power system. The role will support generator installations, power plants, substations, utility interfaces, and brownfield expansions. Early technical decisions on these projects carry directly through construction, energization, and commissioning.
Your technical scope
Power-system design for generators, power plants, substations, and medium- and high-voltage industrial distribution.
Design criteria, single-line diagrams, equipment specifications, datasheets, technical requisitions, cable schedules, grounding, and protection-and-control documentation.
Generator and auxiliary-system interfaces, including synchronization, grounding, protection, controls, balance-of-plant requirements, and integration with an existing facility.
Load flow, short-circuit, protection coordination, arc-flash, grounding, motor-starting, voltage-drop, and equipment-sizing studies.
Selection and evaluation of generators, transformers, switchgear, breakers, relays, cables, motor-control equipment, and substation systems.
Protection philosophies, study recommendations, relay-setting requirements, electrical operating philosophies, and protected energization plans.
The leadership part of the role
Establish a defensible design basis and identify missing data, system constraints, tie-in risks, utility requirements, and decisions that need client confirmation.
Lead technical reviews with clients, utilities, vendors, and the controls, instrumentation, process, mechanical, and civil/structural disciplines.

Review vendor proposals and drawings, address deviations and technical queries, and support procurement decisions.
Provide technical oversight during construction, testing, relay work, outages, energization, commissioning, and turnover.
Check and guide the work of other electrical personnel, develop scopes and estimates, and help build DEG’s high-voltage and power practice.
Required background
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and professional registration with APEGA, or the ability to obtain registration promptly.
Senior industrial experience with generation, substations, protection, and medium- or high-voltage power distribution.
Demonstrated ability to complete or direct power-system studies and turn the results into practical equipment and protection decisions.
Working command of applicable Canadian codes, utility requirements, and relevant IEEE, CSA, IEC, and client standards.
Strong technical writing, design-review, client-communication, and multidisciplinary coordination skills.
Eligibility to work in Canada and willingness to travel to industrial sites when the work requires it.
Particularly relevant experience
ETAP, EasyPower, SKM, CYME, or comparable analysis software.
Generator paralleling, black start, load shedding, microgrids, utility interconnection, or data-centre power.
Brownfield tie-ins, outages, relay testing, energization, and commissioning in oil and gas, mining, petrochemical, utility, or heavy-industrial facilities.
Why this opportunity is differentThis position offers the opportunity to help shape an expanding area of DEG engineering, with the freedom to influence technical standards, project execution, and the growth of the practice. The arrangement is hybrid in Calgary, with site involvement determined by the project phase and client needs. Compensation is competitive and reflects the seniority, technical depth, and accountability required for the role.
DEG engineering welcomes qualified applicants from all backgrounds. We thank everyone who applies;
only candidates selected for the next stage will be contacted.
