Position Summary: Reporting to the Associate Director, International Education, the Safety Abroad Officer is responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring of international safety education, training, protocols and communications. They will manage activities related to international travel with a focus on risk management for McGill student travel for University-sanctioned activities. The incumbent will manage the McGill Student Travel registry app, the Safety Abroad webpage and McGill’s Learning Management Course platform for training. The incumbent will be responsible for developing and maintaining standard operating processes and procedures, implementing quality management practices and continuous improvements to ensure efficient and effective use of the systems. They will also be responsible for compiling and reviewing Faculty safety plans for field courses travel. This role leads data analysis and prepares data requests. The incumbent will establish travel safety preparedness information and orientation sessions (i.E. Regional Information and Networking sessions) and serve as an advisor to students, faculty, staff and administration on matters related to student travel risk and security. Primary Responsibilities Training and Education: Develops, delivers, and oversees international travel safety education and training for students studying abroad. Acts as a University-wide resource related to safety abroad and provides expert advice on global safety and security to University leadership, committees, faculty, staff and students. Provides expertise and support to ensure programs, activities and actions are conducted according to the University’s travel safety requirements. Remains informed on current standards and best practices through participation in external communities of practice.



Identifies opportunities to inform Faculties and other units about safety abroad requirements and procedures. Develops, delivers and monitors safety abroad information, training and outreach. Manages some traveler tracking and travel safety compliance. Technical systems support and management: Acts as the key internal resource and subject matter expert for system workflows and troubleshooting systems. Oversees accuracy of international travel data in app. Maintains effective communication with external service providers. Protocols and Process: Provides support in the design, implementation, and evaluation of risk management and safety abroad protocols, procedures, and programs. Promotes the development and consistent implementation of processes to support safety abroad for students. Utilizes a continuous improvement approach to ensure best and promising practices are implemented in incident management, documentation, and systems approaches. Emergency Response: Reviews incident alerts and initiates timely communications with students, staff, faculty, partners, and other stakeholders regarding events or incidents that may pose safety concerns, in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures. Oversees the administrative procedure for reviewing travel requests to areas of elevated risk (travel exemptions). Manages emergency response and crisis management support activities.



Makes recommendations on active cases and presents related documentation/case analysis. Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities Successful completion of a post-secondary degree in a related field and a minimum of 4 years of experience in a related safety/study abroad role in a post-secondary environment. Experience with intercultural and international issues required. Knowledge and ability to design and facilitate information sessions and risk assessments to diverse audiences. Experience working effectively with diverse communities of students and promoting inclusion; strong interpersonal skills and intercultural sensitivity. Ability to handle emergency situations and effectively prioritize and execute tasks. Knowledge of current best practices pertaining to international activities. Experience working with university policy and regulations governing study abroad; risk management. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills (English and French). Critical attention to detail. Strong time management and organizational skills. Analytical, research and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated experience working in a decentralized workplace with diverse stakeholders including senior management. Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion, tact, sound judgment, integrity and diplomacy.
