We are seeking an enthusiastic and engaged metallurgical engineer who appreciates the chance to see metallurgical theory and science put into practice in the furnaces of our heat treating facility.

Role Description The Metallurgical Engineer / Technical & Lab Services Lead is a full-time, on-site role located in Edmonton, AB, and it supports Thermex's heat-treating operations with a focus on collaborative technical input, assistance with process development and troubleshooting, and an emphasis on quality control measures across the shop.
Duties will include metallurgical testing, lab operations oversight, technical troubleshooting, process verification & optimization, customer technical support, staff training, QC oversight, new process development, & advising on equipment upgrades and procurement.
This role is intended to be practical, shop-floor connected, and capable of performing lab technician, metallographer, and metallurgical engineering duties as required.
The position will also train and mentor the QC Assistant/Lab Technician Trainee so routine lab, metallography, furnace compliance support, and internal QC tasks are performed reliably by trained staff.




This role provides technical input and participation in the maintenance of our Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001).
Qualifications B.Sc. or graduate level degree in Metallurgical Engineering / Materials Engineering. Equivalent consideration may be given to candidates with strong practical heat-treating, metallography, lab, and technical troubleshooting experience.
Registered P.Eng. or E.I.T.
Hands-on heat-treating industry experience, including furnace operation, process control, hardness testing, case depth testing, and metallurgical lab procedures.
Well versed in ferrous metallurgy, interpretation of microstructures, with competence in failure analysis.
Ability to interpret customer specifications, review test results, prepare technical reports, and support customer technical questions.
Robust practical troubleshooting skills, including root cause analysis and corrective recommendations.
Knowledge of internal QC, lab documentation, calibration requirements, furnace compliance support, process verification, and safe lab practices.
Willingness and ability to teach & explain technical matters in plain language, and develop less experienced staff.
Preferred technical knowledge includes familiarity with applicable customer specifications, heat-treating standards, furnace compliance requirements, calibration practices, internal QC requirements, and audit support expectations relevant to Thermex’s customer base and processes.
Must be hands-on, shop-floor comfortable, practical, organized, reliable, team-focused, a good and open communicator, and willing to fill lab technician, metallographer, and engineering functions as required.
