We are currently building a pool of candidates for relief positions in our 9-8-8 program. Candidates will be contacted for interviews if a position becomes available. This is a outstanding opportunity for those who have flexible availability and a passion for helping others!
Mental Health Workers (9-8-8) provide immediate assessment and support to individuals who call the 9-8-8 call line. The 9-8-8 call line is a national mental health hotline for individuals experiencing thoughts of suicide and/or emotional distress. The primary goals are to establish initial contact, provide assessment and intervention to stabilize crises, support development of safety and recovery plans, and promote relapse prevention and transition to longer-term supports through evidence-based interventions.

Wage: $29.70 to $31.13 per hour

Available shifts include:
7:00 AM - 5:00 PM
12:00 PM - 10:00 PM
9:00 PM - 8:00 AM - an hourly premium is provided for overnight shifts
This is an on-site position located in Peterborough, Ontario. Preference is given to candidates with daytime and overnight availability. It is a unionized position, and shifts are offered according to the collective agreement.

Key Responsibilities Mental Health Work
Establish rapport and collaborate with callers.
Assess risk, including suicidal thoughts, feelings, and actions.
Evaluate strengths, supports, and coping strategies.
Develop and review safety and recovery plans.
Empower callers to work towards safety.
Engage emergency services when required.
Provide supportive interventions and identify support sources.
Assist with system navigation (health, housing, financial, legal, education, employment).




Facilitate referrals to community resources.
Collaborate with other staff and programs.
Provide mental health education and information.
Documentation
Complete assessments, case notes, and administrative tasks.
Maintain client records and demographic data accurately.
Other Activities
Liaise with community partners and participate in outreach activities.
Performance Management and Professional Development
Participate in performance reviews, stay current on legislation and best practices, and engage in ongoing training.
Health and Safety Responsibilities
Comply with all health and safety regulations and procedures.
Client Safety
Adhere to safety programs and infection control policies.
Quality Assurance Measures
Note: Q.A.M does not apply to this position.
Other Duties
Attend meetings, participate in quality improvement, and serve on committees as needed.
Position Requirements Education and Training: A Bachelor's degree in social or health sciences is preferred; relevant experience and a diploma may be considered. Mandatory training includes health and safety, ASIST, verbal intervention, O.C.A.N., CRM system, and First Aid/CPR. Assets include a Master’s degree and specialized training in mental health interventions.
Experience: Minimum of 3 years in case management or community supports, with understanding of crisis and recovery models, mental health legislation, and demonstrated assessment and crisis intervention skills.
Additional Requirements: Valid driver’s license, vehicle, police records check, references, lived experience with mental health or addiction issues is an asset, and proof of COVID-19 vaccination.
Working Conditions: Office, community, and client homes; working with individuals in crisis, flexible hours including evenings, and transporting clients as needed.
