Road Heavy Duty Mechanic
Job Summary
The Road Heavy Duty Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining Alternative Group's fleet of heavy equipment, landscaping and grounds maintenance equipment, trucks, vans, and trailers. This position performs both field and shop repairs while ensuring equipment reliability, minimizing downtime, and maintaining safety and compliance standards. The successful candidate must be capable of working independently, responding to equipment breakdowns, and delivering timely and effective maintenance solutions at shop locations, job sites, and roadside environments.
1. Field Service, Repairs & Maintenance
1a Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, fuel, and electronic system failures on heavy equipment and fleet vehicles.
1b Respond to breakdowns and service calls at job sites and roadside environments to restore equipment operation.
1c Perform repairs, preventative maintenance, component replacements, and system adjustments to minimize downtime and maximize equipment reliability.
2. Equipment Inspections & Fleet Support
2a Conduct operational and safety inspections on heavy equipment, trucks, trailers, landscaping equipment, and fleet vehicles.
2b Test equipment following repairs to verify performance, functionality, and compliance with safety standards.
2c Support shop operations by assisting with major repairs, seasonal fleet preparation, and technical troubleshooting.
3. Inventory, Documentation & Administration
3a Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, inspection reports, and repair documentation.
3b Track parts usage and assist with inventory management, procurement activities, and service truck stocking.
3c Maintain service vehicles, tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean, organized, and qualified manner.
4. Safety & Compliance
4a Follow all company safety policies, procedures,
and safe work practices at all times.
4b Ensure repairs and maintenance activities meet manufacturer specifications, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
4c Participate in safety meetings, inspections, training programs, and continuous improvement initiatives.
5. Qualifications & Experience
5a Journeyperson Heavy Duty Mechanic Certification, Red Seal Certification, or equivalent industry experience preferred.
5b Valid Class 5 Driver's License required. Class 1 or Class 3 License with Air Brake Endorsement is considered an asset.
5c Minimum 3-5 years of experience repairing heavy equipment, fleet vehicles, landscaping equipment, excavation equipment, or related machinery.
6. Technical & Professional Skills
6a Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting abilities across mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems.
6b Proficiency with diagnostic software, scan tools, service equipment, technical manuals, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
6c Excellent organizational, communication, time-management, and independent problem-solving skills.
7. Working Conditions
7a Work is performed in both shop and field environments, including job sites and roadside locations.
7b Regular exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, dust, fuels, oils, grease, vibration, and moving equipment.
7c Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting, climbing, kneeling, bending, and standing for extended periods, while maintaining a flexible schedule that may include overtime, weekends, and emergency call-outs.
