Calgary, Alberta | Independent Contract Position | Per-Project Compensation

We are looking for a motivated and detail-oriented person to join our residential energy modelling team in Calgary.

This is a contract position combining computer-based energy modelling with field testing in new homes under construction. Previous experience with modelling software or residential energy modelling is not required. Training will be provided.

We are more interested in finding someone with the right aptitude, attention to detail, reliability and motivation to learn than someone who already has experience in the field.

The work

This is production-oriented technical work involving a regular flow of residential projects. Accuracy is extremely important, along with developing the ability to work efficiently and manage assigned projects within reasonable turnaround times.

The work includes:

- Reviewing residential construction drawings and specifications
- Creating residential energy models using HOT2000 software
- Entering and checking detailed building information
- Following established modelling and quality-control procedures
- Performing blower-door airtightness testing at residential construction sites
- Installing and operating blower-door testing equipment
- Travelling to job sites in Calgary and surrounding areas
- Managing assigned projects independently and communicating with other members of our small team

What we're looking for

The right person will have:

- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Good computer skills and an ability to learn new software
- Comfort working with numbers, measurements and technical information
- The ability to read and understand residential construction drawings, or the aptitude and willingness to learn
- Good organizational and time-management skills
- The ability to work independently and reliably manage assigned work
- A genuine interest in learning residential energy modelling and building science




- A valid driver's licence and reliable access to their own vehicle
- The ability to transport, lift and install blower-door testing equipment and perform testing in residential construction environments

Experience in residential construction, drafting, engineering, building science, energy advising or HOT2000 modelling would be an asset, but is not required.

Training and certification

Previous energy modelling experience is not required. Training will be provided and the initial training period will be paid on an hourly basis.

As part of becoming qualified to perform this work, the successful candidate will be required to complete the applicable training and examinations and meet Natural Resources Canada registration requirements, including a criminal record check.

We are looking for someone with the aptitude and motivation to learn the work, successfully complete the required qualification process, and develop into an accurate and efficient energy modeller.

Contract arrangement and compensation

This is an independent contract position, not a salaried employment position.

Following the initial training period, compensation is paid on a per-project basis. The work is production-oriented, and the compensation structure rewards proficiency and efficiency while maintaining the high level of accuracy required for the work.
