The Driver Trainer, Safety & Compliance Specialist supports safe, compliant and consistent transportation operations across company locations. This hands-on role combines driver assessment and coaching with fleet safety, regulatory compliance, incident prevention, documentation and auditing. The successful candidate will work closely with Operations, Human Resources, Recruitment, Dispatch, Fleet/Maintenance and site leadership to strengthen driver performance and reduce safety and compliance risk.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct pre-employment and post-hire road tests using approved evaluation criteria, and provide clear written recommendations regarding driver suitability.
- Deliver new-driver orientation, onboarding and refresher training covering defensive driving, hours of service, trip inspections, cargo securement, collision prevention, company policies, electronic logging devices and site-specific requirements.
- Conduct scheduled and remedial ride-alongs to assess driving habits, identify risks and provide practical coaching and follow-up.
- Develop, update and maintain training materials, assessment forms, lesson plans and competency records.
- Coach drivers following incidents, complaints, violations, poor inspections or identified performance concerns, and document corrective action and retraining outcomes.
- Lead driver safety meetings, toolbox talks and targeted awareness campaigns using trends, incidents and regulatory updates.
- · Review driver abstracts, CVOR Driver Abstracts and other required screening documents for hiring, annual review and ongoing monitoring, escalating concerns in accordance with company policy.
- Conduct driver qualification file audits and confirm that licences, medicals, abstracts, training records, certificates and other required documents are complete, current and securely maintained.
- Perform scheduled and unannounced site, terminal,
vehicle and documentation audits; document findings, assign corrective actions and follow up to closure.
- Monitor compliance with applicable federal and provincial transportation requirements, including hours of service, daily vehicle inspections, maintenance documentation, cargo securement and record retention.
- Support CVOR performance monitoring by reviewing inspection, conviction, collision and out-of-service trends and recommending preventive action.
- Participate as an active member of the Health and Safety Committee, including inspections, meetings, recommendations and follow-up activities as required.
- Assist with internal investigations involving collisions, injuries, cargo claims, complaints, near misses and regulatory violations; gather facts, preserve records and prepare objective reports.
- Support regulatory, client and insurance audits and assist with corrective action plans and supporting documentation.
- Collaborate with Operations, Dispatch, Human Resources, Recruitment, Fleet/Maintenance and site leadership to address driver risk, training needs and compliance gaps.
- Track and report key safety indicators, audit findings, training completion, incidents and corrective actions; identify trends and recommend practical improvements.
- Provide subject-matter guidance during driver selection, onboarding, performance management and return-to-driving decisions.
- Promote a respectful, prevention-focused safety culture and model professional,
lawful and defensive driving practices at all times.
- Travel to company and client sites as required and perform other related safety, training and compliance duties assigned within the scope of the role.

OUR REQUIREMENTS
- Valid Ontario AZ driver's licence in good standing.
- Minimum 10 years of verifiable commercial AZ driving experience, including experience operating relevant vehicle and equipment types.
- Satisfactory driver's abstract and CVOR Driver Abstract
- Demonstrated experience conducting road tests, ride-alongs, driver coaching, safety training and compliance audits.
- Strong working knowledge of applicable transportation safety requirements, including hours of service, ELDs, daily vehicle inspections, cargo securement and commercial vehicle operations.
- Experience reviewing driver qualification and compliance files and maintaining accurate, audit-ready records.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, sound judgment and the confidence to address unsafe behaviour directly and professionally.
- Ability to prepare explicit reports, maintain organized records and use Microsoft Office and transportation or learning-management systems.
- Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and, including occasional early-morning, evening or weekend work based on operational needs.
