Position: Outdoor Education Backcountry Instructor (Fall, 2026)

Daily Rate: $200 - $415, dependent on experience and qualifications

Position Overview:This is a contract position to support our overnight backcountry outdoor education program for students in Grade 9 (ages 14-15). The Grade 9 Explorer Program consists of a day of staff training and two 5-day outdoor education expeditions (1 day on campus & 4 days on trip) where students participate in activities such as canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing and hiking. Successful candidates will also help the students engage in team-building activities, teach camp craft, and run debrief activities that align with the core values of our School. Instructors will work in pairs to deliver programming according to a progression of skills established by the Outdoor Education department.

Remuneration is provided at a daily rate, according to an established pay scale based on experience and certifications.

Staff Training: September 27, 2026

Grade 9 Explorer Trip 1: September 28 - October 2, 2026

Grade 9 Explorer Trip 2: October 5 - 9, 2026

This individual embodies the following core competencies: empathy, integrity, humility, respect, responsibility, and resilience.

Key Responsibilities:

- Supervising, with a co-instructor, a group of up to 12 students in the outdoors;
- Providing educational programming in accordance with the school’s outdoor skills curriculum;
- Reporting on the progress and achievement of participants at the end of each program;
- Attending and participating in staff training activities;
- Doing basic maintenance on equipment and supplies to be used on trips.

Qualifications:

The following are requirements for this position:

- Demonstrated interest in outdoor education programs and experience working with youth in a wilderness camp setting (hiking, canoeing or kayaking);
- Experience leading outdoor programs in one or more of hiking,



canoeing or kayaking;
- Sound judgment and decision-making skills;
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving abilities;
- Team player with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate in verbal and written forms;
- 40+ hour first aid course.
- Key competencies and EQ in the following areas: self-awareness, self-management, empathy, social expertness, initiative, and accountability.

Preference will be given to candidates who also have the following:

- 80+ hour wilderness first aid course;
- Class 4 driver’s license or equivalent;
- Experience leading outdoor programs with youth;
- Industry qualifications in outdoor skill areas applicable to the trips being offered.
