We are currently seeking an experienced temporary part-time Clinic Nurse to join our team based out of our Family Health Centre at 13930 74 Ave NW, Edmonton, Alberta.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, HealthCare Services & Clinical Compliance.

The Clinic

Nurse is an integral member of the Family Health Centre team, working collaboratively with physicians, clinic staff, patients, families and other healthcare providers to support the delivery of safe, efficient and patient-centred primary care.

The Clinic

Nurse provides nursing assessments, telephone triage, treatments, medication and vaccine administration, patient education, care coordination and other clinical services within their legislated scope of practice, individual competence, professional standards and organizational policies.

The Clinic

Nurse supports physicians with patient care and assists with the coordination of referrals, diagnostic testing, follow-up care and other clinical needs. The role also supports the day-to-day operation of the clinic through accurate documentation, electronic medical record (EMR) management, supply management and communication with patients and external healthcare providers. The successful candidate will demonstrate sound clinical judgment, strong communication and organizational skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a busy primary care environment.

Clinical Care

Assess patients and identify presenting health concerns, including obtaining and documenting relevant health information and vital signs. Perform telephone triage within scope of practice, assess the urgency of patient concerns and facilitate appropriate follow-up. Provide nursing care and treatments within legislated scope of practice, individual competence and organizational policy.

Administer medications, injections and immunizations as authorized and appropriate to scope of practice. Perform clinical procedures within scope and demonstrated competence, which may include wound care, ear irrigation, injections,



specimen collection and other clinic-based nursing procedures. Assist physicians with examinations, treatments and procedures as required.

Prepare patients for examinations and procedures and provide appropriate nursing support throughout their visit. Recognize changes or concerns in a patient's condition and communicate or elevate appropriately to the physician or other healthcare provider. Provide patients and families with clear health information, education and instructions regarding treatment, medications, self-care, prevention and follow-up.

Support health promotion, disease prevention and chronic disease management initiatives as applicable to the clinic. Care Coordination and Communication Coordinate referrals, consultations, diagnostic testing and follow-up appointments as required. Communicate relevant clinical information to physicians and other members of the healthcare team in a timely and appropriate manner.

Follow up on patient care needs, outstanding investigations, referrals and physician-directed clinical tasks as required. Collaborate with physicians, nursing colleagues, medical office assistants and external healthcare providers to support continuity of care. Respond professionally to patient and family questions and concerns and direct matters to the appropriate healthcare provider when required.

Documentation and Clinic Operations Document assessments, interventions, treatments, patient education and other relevant clinical information accurately and promptly in the electronic medical record.

Use Med

Access EMR, Netcare and other approved clinical information systems in accordance with organizational policies and applicable privacy requirements. Support appointment scheduling and patient flow based on clinical needs and clinic processes. Prepare and maintain examination and treatment rooms to support safe and efficient patient care.

Clean, disinfect and process reusable clinical equipment and instruments in accordance with infection prevention and control requirements and manufacturer instructions. Support medication and vaccine inventory, storage and monitoring processes as assigned. Support clinic billing verification processes as assigned.

Quality, Safety and Professional Practice Practise in accordance with applicable legislation, regulatory standards, professional standards, ethical requirements and St. Michael’s Health Group policies and procedures.



Follow infection prevention and control practices, occupational health and safety requirements, and established clinic procedures.

Identify and report patient safety concerns, incidents and potential risks through established processes. Participate in quality improvement initiatives and contribute recommendations to improve clinic processes, patient care and workflow. Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with applicable privacy and health information requirements.

Participate in staff meetings, education, training and professional development as required. Graduate of an approved Licensed Practical Nursing or Registered Nursing education program. Current registration and practice permit in good standing with the applicable Alberta regulatory college: College of Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides of Alberta (CLHA) for LPNs College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) for RNs Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for healthcare providers.

Current immunization/vaccine administration competency where required for the position. Additional education or certification relevant to primary care nursing is considered an asset. Minimum six (6) months of recent nursing experience required.

Previous experience in a primary care, family practice, medical clinic or ambulatory care setting is preferred.

Experience with medication administration, injections, immunizations and common outpatient nursing procedures is preferred.

Experience with telephone triage and patient assessment is considered an asset.

Experience using Med Access EMR and Alberta Netcare is considered a strong asset. Strong nursing assessment, critical thinking and clinical judgment skills. A patient-centred, respectful and professional approach to care.

Ability to manage multiple priorities in a busy clinic environment. Ability to work independently within scope of practice while collaborating effectively with physicians and other members of the healthcare team. Proficiency with electronic medical records and general computer applications.

Ability and willingness to maintain current nursing knowledge and competencies relevant to the position. Ability to perform the physical requirements associated with providing nursing care in an outpatient clinic environment. A current and clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check that has been obtained no more than 90 calendar days prior to the hire date.
