Key Responsibilities
- Clean, disinfect, inspect, package, and sterilize dental instruments.
- room turn over and set up
- Operate sterilization equipment such as autoclaves and ultrasonic cleaners.
- Follow infection-prevention and control procedures and workplace safety policies.
- Monitor and document sterilization cycles, including chemical and biological indicators.
- Maintain accurate sterilization and equipment records.
- Assemble and organize instrument trays for dental procedures.
- Store sterilized instruments appropriately and check package integrity.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the sterilization area.
- Identify damaged, contaminated, or improperly sterilized instruments and take appropriate action.
- Restock dental supplies and sterilization materials.
- Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of sterilization equipment.
- Handle contaminated instruments using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Communicate with dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, and other clinic staff regarding instrument availability and infection-control concerns.
- Help with charting if feasible
- Follow applicable provincial/territorial infection-control requirements and clinic policies.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent is typically required.
- Dental sterilization/infection-control training is an asset.
- Previous experience in a dental, healthcare, medical device reprocessing, or sterilization environment is preferred.
- Knowledge of infection prevention and control practices.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established procedures.
- Good organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to work safely with contaminated instruments and chemicals.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a healthcare team.
Typical Working Conditions The technician generally works in a dental clinic or dedicated sterilization area. The position may involve standing for extended periods, repetitive instrument handling, wearing PPE, and working around cleaning chemicals and sterilization equipment.
Pay: $22.00-$25.00 per hour
