Role Responsibilities
Reporting to the Recreation Operations Lead, the District Recreation Engagement Officer is a key public-facing position responsible for delivering education, engagement, and stewardship initiatives that support safe, responsible, and sustainable recreation on Crown land.
The position develops and delivers a district education and engagement program, recruits and directs seasonal staff, and provides the public with information about recreational opportunities, responsible land use, regulations, safety, and stewardship. Working independently, including in remote locations and challenging weather conditions, the position conducts site patrols, documents observations, collects data, and maintains a visible presence at recreation sites.
The position also supports implementation of the Public Lands Administration Regulation through signs and notices and maintains recreation communication infrastructure such as signs, maps, and kiosks.
A key focus is building relationships with recreational user groups, community organizations, enforcement agencies, and other stakeholders. The position supports partnerships, organized events, trail projects, stewardship activities, and recreational site clean‑ups.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver a District education and engagement program and annual plan aligned with departmental priorities.
- Recruit, train, equip and direct seasonal Recreation Engagement Officers.
- Educate the public on responsible recreation, stewardship, regulations, permitted activities, restrictions, and safety.
- Maintain a visible field presence and conduct regular patrols of recreation sites.
- Collect and document field information to support recreation planning, site management, and maintenance priorities.
- Maintain signs, maps, kiosks and other recreation communication infrastructure.
- Support implementation of the Public Lands Administration Regulation through signs and notices.
- Provide recreational user perspectives to support planning and management decisions.
- Build relationships with recreational groups and stakeholders and support collaborative recreation projects and stewardship initiatives.
- Communicate Government of Alberta recreation objectives and requirements to stakeholders and organized recreational users.
- Advise event organizers on required approvals and appropriate application processes.
- Attend organized recreation events, trail maintenance activities and stewardship days.
- Coordinate and facilitate recreational waste clean‑up activities on Crown land.
- Maintain effective working relationships with enforcement agencies and other partners.

Qualifications
- A related two (2) years diploma in outdoor recreation, land or resource management, forestry, enforcement or comparable areas and 3 years of related experience.
- Previous experience working outdoors and comfortable working alone in remote areas.
- Valid Driver’s License (Class 5)
Equivalencies will be considered on the basis of one year of experience for one year of education or one year of education for one year of experience.
Additional Requirement And Assets
- Knowledge of the Public Lands Act and Public Land Administration Regulation (PLAR).
- Valid OHV and snowmobile certification, with demonstrated proficiency in the safe operation of off‑highway vehicles.
- Wilderness First Aid and knowledge of wilderness survival practices.
- Defensive driving certification and strong commitment to safe vehicle operation in remote environments.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to deliver clear messaging to individuals with varying levels of knowledge and differing perspectives.
- Strong interpersonal, collaboration and relationship‑building skills, with demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships within team environments.
- Proven ability to work independently in remote backcountry locations, adjust to changing priorities and operate effectively with minimal supervision.
- Strong working knowledge of volunteer engagement, public education and stakeholder collaboration, including the ability to communicate regulations, safety practices and recreational information to the public.
- Experience or knowledge in contract management project management partnership development and supervision of field staff.
- Strong situational awareness and conflict‑management skills, with verbal judo skills considered an asset.
- Comfortable and competent working alone in challenging backcountry and remote environments while maintaining a high standard of personal and operational safety.
- Proficient in GPS navigation and field data collection.
- GIS knowledge and proficiency considered an asset.
Notes
- This position is in Hinton and other Northwest locations may be considered.
- You will be required to travel throughout the North Region.
- Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 36.25 hours per week. There is a requirement to work weekends during peak operating season.
