Job Overview:
Early Childhood Group Piano Teacher
Job type: Contractual, fixed-term program (3 terms)
Program dates: Saturdays, October 10 to November 28, 2026 (1st term)
Compensation: $33.75–$45.00 per 30-minute class, based on enrolment
Richmond Music School is urgently seeking an enthusiastic and dependable piano teacher to lead our early childhood group piano pilot program.
The program is designed for young children who are ready to develop foundational piano skills through a creative and engaging small-group learning environment. Each class will have a maximum of four students, with a parent or guardian participating alongside each child.
Class schedule
Saturday mornings (10am to 12pm) (September to June each year)
Program focus The instructor will introduce foundational piano and musicianship skills through age-appropriate activities, including:
- Basic note reading and keyboard awareness
- Rhythm, counting, and musical patterns
- Dynamics and expressive playing
- Singing, listening, and creative musical response
- Music and movement activities, can use small percussion instruments
- Imagination and musical exploration
- Positive parent-child participation
The classroom is equipped with four full-sized, 88-key weighted digital pianos and recent classroom seating. Grand piano, and one keyboard provided for instructor's use.
Responsibilities
- Plan and teach engaging 30-minute group piano lessons
- Create a welcoming, structured, and encouraging learning environment
- Adapt activities to different learning needs and levels of readiness
- Communicate professionally with RMS administration
- Maintain consistent attendance for the full eight-week pilot period
- Provide lesson plans and brief progress information as required
- Follow RMS policies, procedures, and program expectations
- Work collaboratively with the school regarding program development
Qualifications
- Advanced piano proficiency
- Degree or diploma in music, piano performance, music education, or a related field preferred
- Previous experience teaching young children
- Experience with group piano instruction strongly preferred
- Knowledge of early childhood approaches such as Dalcroze, Orff, Kodály, or other movement-based methods is an asset
- Warm, energetic, patient, and confident classroom manner
- Strong communication, organization, and classroom-management skills
- Reliable and able to commit to Saturdays
- Successful completion of a criminal record check for working with children will be required
