About Us
Yuzyk Academy is a tuition free public charter school in Calgary, Alberta that will open in September 2026. In it’s inaugural year, 2026-2027, Yuzyk Academy will offer Kindergarten to Grade 3. Each subsequent year, Yuzyk Academy will add an additional grade level until it reaches its full Kindergarten to Grade 9 configuration in 2029-2030. We are excited to offer this unique educational bilingual program in a beautiful, historic building in central downtown Calgary.
Yuzyk Academy’s mission is to provide Ukrainian-speaking students with an opportunity to maintain their mother tongue while mastering English and to offer English-speaking students the opportunity to learn Ukrainian as a second language, enriching their cultural understanding and cognitive development.
Using Comprehensible Input as the primary pedagogical approach, student in our program will become bilingual and therefore able to communicate, first functionally, and then, over time, fluently, in both Ukrainian and English. Beyond developing high levels of proficiency in Ukrainian and English, Yuzyk Academy students will be taught a culturally enriched learning environment and develop a comprehensive understanding of Ukrainian culture,
its role in Canadian history, and its contributions to Alberta’s development. They will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in Ukrainian culture through dance, art, music and cooking.
Education and Credentials
- Bachelor of Education Degree or equivalent recognized by Alberta Education
- Valid, current and completed K-12 Alberta Teaching Certificate
Demonstrated Skills and Competencies
- Confidence, skill, knowledge, and understanding of Alberta Program of Studies
- Understanding and knowledge of the Comprehensible Input Pedagogical Approach or a willingness to learn and operationalize its use in the classroom
- Experience or familiarity with scoring criteria for provincial assessments
- Capacity to differentiate instructional practices and use effective student engagement strategies
- Comfort with employing outcome-based assessment and reporting
- Collaboration with staff team in developing meaningful learning experiences for students
- Strong ability to build and maintain trusting relationships with students, colleagues and parents
- Personal attributes to adapt, grow and thrive in a constantly evolving setting
- Experience or familiarity working within a bilingual program would be an asset
- Strong proficiency in both spoken and written Ukrainian language would be an asset but not required
