Position Summary A global manufacturing leader is seeking a skilled and driven
Environmental Engineer to join the environmental health and safety (EHS) team at our large industrial complex in the Greater Grand Rapids area. This role is critical in maintaining the facility's license to operate by managing daily multi-media environmental compliance.
The ideal candidate possesses a strong background in manufacturing, technical expertise in air, water, and waste regulations, and the communication skills necessary to collaborate with both production teams and regulatory agencies.
Key Responsibilities
Multi-Media Compliance:
Oversee and maintain daily compliance programs across all environmental media, with a balanced focus on
Air (CAA) ,
Water (CWA) , and
Waste (RCRA)
regulations.
Permitting & Reporting:
Prepare, review, and submit local, state (EGLE), and federal regulatory reports, including
FESOP
Air deviations,
NPDES wastewater monitoring,
Tier II ,
TRI (Form R) , and annual waste summaries.
Audits & Inspections:
Lead routine facility inspections and internal environmental audits to proactively identify compliance gaps. Develop and track corrective/preventive action (CAPA) plans.
Agency Liaison
Assist the Environmental Manager in hosting regulatory agency inspectors, managing permit renewals, and responding to regulatory inquiries.
Waste Management
Characterize, track, and optimize the storage, labeling,
and manifesting of hazardous and universal industrial waste streams.
Continuous Improvement
Support the maintenance and optimization of the facility’s Environmental Management System ( ISO 14001 ). Identify and drive waste-reduction, energy-saving, and sustainability initiatives.
Training & Culture:
Develop and deliver environmental awareness training to plant personnel to ensure a culture of compliance on the manufacturing floor.
Required Qualifications
Education
Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related technical discipline.
Experience
2 to 5 years of progressive environmental compliance experience within an industrial or engineering consulting setting.
Industry Experience
Strong preference for candidates with direct experience working inside a manufacturing facility or heavy industrial complex.
Technical Knowledge
Proven, hands-on experience handling a mix of air emissions tracking, wastewater/stormwater discharge management, and hazardous waste regulations.
Soft Skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong problem-solving capabilities, and the ability to manage multiple regulatory deadlines effectively.
