Infrastructure is responsible for delivering about one quarter of the Alberta government’s Capital Plan, which addresses the provincial infrastructure needs of Alberta’s population that support key social programs and services and economic development. The Ministry designs, builds, manages, and maintains government-owned and operated facilities, and collaborates with other ministries to ensure that school and hospital infrastructure meet the needs of Alberta’s population. Infrastructure also provides accommodation services and manages a large portfolio of owned and leased facilities while maintaining fiscal accountability and optimizing value for Albertans.
Working alongside and leading summer students, the position plans, plants, and carries out year-round site maintenance of green spaces at the Legislature Grounds, providing clients and visitors with a clean, safe, and visually appealing public environment. Gardeners perform a range of general tasks including flower bed and container design, propagation, pruning, soil remediation and integrated pest management. Winter duties include set up and take-down and maintenance of seasonal displays, snow and ice removal.
The work performed helps protect government assets and ensures the Grounds remain functional and well maintained throughout the year. Planning, creating,
and maintaining the Government Centre grounds utilizing accepted horticultural industry standards while staying within operational timeframes and constraints Maintaining safe access throughout the Grounds by responding to seasonal and site conditions Supporting the maintenance and operation of Grounds infrastructure and equipment Provides support to trades, contractors, and other work groups to assist with maintenance, repair, and operational activities on the Grounds Ability to perform physical work outdoors in all weather conditions Competencies are behaviors that are essential to reach our goals in serving Albertans. This level best represents the position as the Gardener regularly works with supervisors, groundworkers, maintenance staff, contractors, and event staff to complete assigned work.

Creative Problem
Solving – Focuses on continuous improvement and increasing breadth of insight: This level best represents the position as the Groundworker regularly encounters maintenance issues, changing site conditions, and operational challenges. Two (2) years experience in Horticulture and/or Landscape Maintenance Valid Class 5 driver's license Assets: Certified Journeyperson Landscape Horticulturist or degree in horticulture biology/botany Greenhouse/Landscape Pesticide License Experience performing grounds maintenance, landscape maintenance, snow and ice control Ability to perform physical work outdoors in all weather conditions WHMIS training Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) This position is a Permanent, full time role with the standard weekly work hours of 40, Monday to Friday (7:00am – 3:30pm).
