Job Title: Intermediate Project Engineer The Intermediate Project Engineer leads and coordinates the execution of small, multi‑discipline projects in the oil and gas sector, ensuring delivery in line with client requirements, contractual obligations, budget, schedule, and quality standards.
This role focuses on gas compression, gas processing, heavy oil facilities, and projects related to decarbonization of energy production, with a strong emphasis on SAGD and heavy oil applications. You collaborate closely with engineering, procurement, fabrication, construction, and commissioning teams to design and build hydrocarbon processing facilities for installation around the world, while also mentoring junior engineers as needed.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate specific multi‑discipline functions or areas within the project scope, including engineering, procurement, fabrication, and commissioning, as applicable.
- Manage interfaces with key project stakeholders to ensure clear communication, alignment, and timely resolution of issues.
- Ensure project performance meets contract specifications, remains within approved budget limits, and progresses according to project baselines and schedules.
- Manage project scope and lead change management submissions and processes, including documentation and approvals.
- Liaise with project planners/schedulers and project cost controls personnel to prepare regular status and progress reports.
- Participate in Piping and Instrumentation Drawing (P&ID;) reviews and Hazardous Operability Studies (HAZOPs) to support safe and efficient facility design.
- Prepare and review line, equipment, instrumentation, and specialty item lists to ensure completeness and accuracy.
- Coordinate and assist with sizing and selection of project instrumentation and process equipment, with a focus on SAGD and heavy oil facilities.
- Participate in the Bid / Evaluate / Award process, including development of Request for Quotation (RFQ) packages, bid evaluations, and Bill of Material (BOM) entry into Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software.
- Check vessel, structural steel, piping spooling, assembly, and civil drawings for accuracy, constructability, and compliance with standards.
- Participate in 3D model reviews and construction planning meetings to support efficient fabrication and installation.
- Coordinate and review the compilation of Project Data and Operating Manuals for distribution to the project team and client.
- Perform shop inspections and resolve Nonconformance Reports (NCRs) in collaboration with fabrication and quality teams.
- Review ship‑loose lists to ensure all materials and components are correctly identified and prepared for shipment.
- Resolve field Requests for Information (RFIs) by working with engineering, construction, and client teams to provide clear guidance.
- Supervise junior or co‑op student project engineers on a task‑level basis, providing direction, coaching, and technical support.
- Engage with clients and internal teams to facilitate project completion across multiple ongoing and upcoming projects.
Essential Skills
- Registered Engineer‑in‑Training or Professional Engineer, or in the process of registration, and in good standing with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
- Minimum of 3 years of oil and gas industry experience, preferably in project engineering roles.
- Undergraduate degree in Civil, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering from an accredited university.
- Experience in mechanical engineering and project engineering within oil and gas facilities.
- Hands‑on experience with SAGD (Steam‑Assisted Gravity Drainage) operations and heavy oil projects.
- Knowledge of well pad design and associated production facilities.
- Ability to coordinate multi‑discipline engineering, procurement, fabrication, and commissioning activities.
- Strong understanding of P&IDs;, HAZOPs, and related process safety and design review practices.
- Competence in reviewing and checking vessel, structural steel, piping spooling, assembly, and civil drawings.
- Experience preparing and reviewing equipment, instrumentation, and specialty item lists.
- Familiarity with RFQ development, bid evaluation, and BOM entry into ERP systems.
- Eligibility to work in Canada.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with oil treater design and optimization.
- Expertise in SAGD boiler feed water softening, evaporator and oily water systems, and bitumen‑water separation processes.
- Knowledge of high‑pressure steam generation systems; experience with Once‑Through Steam Generators (OTSG) is an asset but not critical.
- Experience working on heavy oil and gas processing facilities, including compression and processing projects.
- Ability to participate effectively in 3D model reviews and construction planning meetings.
- Experience compiling project data and operating manuals for internal teams and clients.
- Ability to perform shop inspections and manage Nonconformance Reports (NCRs) to closure.
- Experience resolving field RFIs in collaboration with engineering and construction teams.
- Prior experience supervising or mentoring junior or co‑op engineers on project tasks.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills for client engagements and cross‑functional collaboration.
- Interest in and exposure to projects related to decarbonization of energy production is an advantage.
Work Environment This role is primarily office‑based, working closely with a multidisciplinary engineering team on a day‑to‑day basis. You collaborate regularly with different engineering disciplines, project controls, and procurement, as well as engage directly with clients to support project execution. The position involves frequent interaction with the shop floor and fabrication teams to review drawings, conduct shop inspections, and address nonconformances. There is potential opportunity to travel to project sites during later stages of projects, depending on your interest and willingness to travel. The environment is rapid‑paced and project‑driven, with multiple ongoing and upcoming projects that offer continuous opportunities to develop technical skills and gain exposure to a wide range of oil and gas and decarbonization technologies. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Airdrie, AB.
Pay And Benefits The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $55.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
