Interim Payroll Manager —
Employment Type: Contract (Approx. 3 Months) — potential to extend or convert to permanent
Location: Toronto, ON (Near Pearson Airport) — In office, 5 Days/Week
Rate: $45-50 per hour
Industry: Transportation & Airport Services
Position Type: Backfill
About the Opportunity
Our client is a multi-location travel and transportation services company with operations across six locations in Canada, supporting a workforce of approximately 550 employees spanning salaried, hourly, and unionized roles across four regions.
This confidential search exists because the organization's payroll manager is departing on short notice, creating an immediate need for an experienced payroll professional who can step in and take ownership from day one. The team runs a complex, multi-region bi-weekly payroll cycle with minimal room for disruption, including a high-volume payroll cycle covering three of the six locations.
You'll own end-to-end payroll processing and act as the critical link between payroll and accounting, an area that has needed stronger partnership. This is a hands-on, high-trust role for someone who can bring structure and reliability to a fast-moving environment with significant hourly workforce turnover.
Beyond the initial contract, the organization's business volume increases seasonally, and there is a genuine possibility of extension or conversion to a permanent position for the right person.
Key Responsibilities
- Own end-to-end, bi-weekly payroll processing across multiple Canadian regions for approximately 550 employees on ADP
- Process complex payroll transactions including terminations, ROEs, severance, grievance payouts,
and retroactive pay adjustments across four unionized environments
- Administer payroll for both salaried staff and a high-turnover, hourly frontline workforce
- Partner closely with the Accounting team on GL interface reconciliation and journal entry accuracy
- Process short-term and long-term disability claims and coordinate directly with the benefits provider
- Support pension and benefits enrollment and administration as needed
- Upload and reconcile time and attendance data received from an external system
- Provide guidance to two payroll support staff and help build consistency across processes
- Support quarterly headcount reporting
- Bring documentation and process consistency to a payroll function that is actively working toward a synchronized, standardized platform
What You Bring
- Proven full-cycle, multi-location Canadian payroll experience, including bi-weekly processing for 500 employees
- Strong hands-on ADP proficiency
- Experience with unionized payroll environments, including retroactive pay and grievance payouts
- Experience with Quebec payroll requirements
- Comfort working with a GL interface and partnering directly with Accounting on journal entries
- Ability to hit the ground running with limited handover documentation
- Strong communication skills and a genuine willingness to collaborate cross-functionally
- Comfortable working on-site five days a week in a fast-paced, high-turnover environment
Nice to Have
- Experience reconciling data from an external time and attendance system
- Experience mentoring or supporting junior payroll staff
- Exposure to short-term and long-term disability claims administration
