We are currently seeking an experienced Project Controls Specialist to support the planning, monitoring, and control of major, long-term projects in Ontario.
Position Overview The Project Controls Specialist will support the successful execution of complex projects by providing expertise in cost control, schedule management, progress measurement, forecasting, reporting, and project performance analysis.
The successful candidate will work closely with Project Managers, Project Engineering Leads, planners, schedulers, cost analysts, contractors, and other stakeholders to establish and maintain effective project controls processes and ensure project performance is accurately monitored and reported.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, and monitor project controls processes, procedures, and systems.
- Support the development and maintenance of project schedules, budgets, cost forecasts, and performance baselines.
- Monitor project performance against approved scope, schedule, and budget.
- Track project progress, commitments, expenditures, forecasts, and variances.
- Prepare regular project controls reports, dashboards, forecasts, and management presentations.
- Analyze schedule and cost performance and identify trends, risks, and potential impacts.
- Support earned value management (EVM), progress measurement, and performance analysis where applicable.
- Work with project teams to collect, validate, and analyze progress information.
- Review and monitor contractor and supplier schedules, cost reports, progress claims, and performance data.
- Support change management, including tracking changes, trends, potential changes, and their impact on cost and schedule.
- Maintain project cost and schedule data and ensure information is accurate, current, and traceable.
- Assist with development and maintenance of Work Breakdown Structures (WBS), Cost Breakdown Structures (CBS), and project coding structures.
- Perform variance analysis and provide recommendations to project management.
- Support monthly forecasting and reporting cycles.
- Identify schedule delays, cost pressures, and emerging project risks and communicate them to appropriate stakeholders.
- Assist in developing recovery plans and mitigation strategies for schedule and cost issues.
- Coordinate with engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and project management teams to ensure alignment of project controls information.
- Support project risk and opportunity management activities.
- Maintain project documentation, records, and reporting databases in accordance with project requirements.
- Participate in project review meetings and provide project controls updates to management.
- Support project closeout activities, including final cost and schedule reporting and lessons learned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or diploma in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, Finance, Project Management, or a related discipline.
- 3-5+ years of experience in project controls, project planning, scheduling, cost control, or a related field.
- Experience supporting large-scale engineering, construction, infrastructure, energy, utilities, industrial, or power projects.
- Strong understanding of project management principles and project controls methodologies.
- Experience with project scheduling, cost management, forecasting, progress measurement, and performance reporting.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to interpret complex project data and communicate key findings to project management.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.
Technical Skills Experience with one or more of the following tools is considered an asset:
- Primavera P6
- Microsoft Excel – advanced functions, pivot tables, data analysis, etc.
- Power BI
- SAP or other ERP systems
- Project cost management systems
- Document management and project information systems
Preferred Experience Experience in one or more of the following environments is considered an asset:
- Utilities
- Major infrastructure projects
- Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) projects
- Large industrial projects
- Construction and commissioning
- Major capital projects
- Multidisciplinary engineering projects
