Job Title: Water Treatment Project Engineer The Water Treatment Project Engineer plays a key role in the engineering, design, and delivery of water and heavy oil treatment facilities for oil and gas and SAGD projects.

This position focuses on waste water, tailings, and heavy oil treatment system design, while coordinating multi‑discipline project activities across engineering, procurement, fabrication, and commissioning. The role offers the opportunity to work on complex decarbonization‑related and hydrocarbon processing projects, collaborate with diverse engineering teams, and contribute to industry‑leading modular facility designs.

Responsibilities

- Coordinate multi‑discipline project functions within the overall scope, including engineering, procurement, fabrication, and commissioning activities.
- Manage interfaces and communication with key project stakeholders to ensure alignment on scope, schedule, and deliverables.
- Ensure project performance meets contract specifications, stays within budget limits, and progresses according to contract requirements and project baselines.
- Manage project scope, including preparing and overseeing change management submissions and processes.
- Collaborate with Project Planners/Schedulers and Project Cost Controls personnel to prepare regular reports on project status and progress.
- Participate in Piping and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID;) reviews and Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) studies to support safe and reliable facility design.
- Prepare and review line, equipment, instrumentation, and specialty item lists to ensure completeness and accuracy.
- Coordinate and assist with sizing and selecting project instrumentation and process equipment for water treatment and heavy oil systems.
- Participate in bid, evaluation, and award processes, including developing Request for Quotation (RFQ) packages and performing bid evaluations.
- Enter Bills of Material (BOM) into Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software and ensure data integrity for procurement and fabrication.
- Check vessel, structural steel, piping spooling, assembly, and civil drawings for technical accuracy and constructability.
- Participate in 3D model reviews and construction planning meetings to support efficient fabrication and field execution.
- Coordinate and review the compilation of Project Data and Operating Manuals for distribution to the project team and the client.
- Perform shop inspections to verify quality and compliance, and resolve Nonconformance Reports (NCRs) in a timely manner.
- Review ship loose lists to ensure all components and materials are correctly identified and prepared for shipment.
- Resolve field Requests for Information (RFIs) by providing clear technical guidance and design clarifications.
- Supervise and mentor junior or co‑op student project engineers on a temporary task basis, supporting their development and ensuring quality work output.

Essential Skills

- Registered Engineer‑in‑Training or Skilled Engineer status, or in process of registration, in good standing with the Association of Skilled Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in the oil and gas industry.
- Undergraduate degree in Civil, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering from an accredited university.
- Direct project engineering experience in water treatment for oil and gas or SAGD applications, specifically non‑municipal projects.
- Strong mechanical and project engineering skills, with the ability to work across multiple disciplines.
- Experience in heavy oil treatment and separation processes.




- Experience in waste water and tailings treatment design for oil and gas or SAGD operations.
- Ability to coordinate complex engineering, procurement, fabrication, and commissioning activities.
- Proficiency in reviewing and interpreting P&IDs;, HAZOPs, and technical drawings.
- Competence in preparing and reviewing equipment, instrumentation, and specialty item lists.
- Experience participating in bid processes, including RFQ development and bid evaluations.
- Familiarity with entering and managing Bills of Material (BOM) within Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems.
- Ability to conduct shop inspections and resolve Nonconformance Reports (NCRs).
- Strong communication skills for managing stakeholder interfaces and resolving RFIs.
- Capability to supervise and guide junior or co‑op project engineers on task‑level assignments.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

- Experience with oil treater design and related process equipment.
- Expertise in SAGD boiler feed water softening systems.
- Experience with evaporator and oily water treatment systems.
- Knowledge of bitumen‑water separation processes and equipment.
- Experience with high‑pressure steam generation systems; once‑through steam generator (OTSG) experience is an asset but not mandatory.
- Experience participating in 3D model reviews and construction planning.
- Ability to compile comprehensive Project Data and Operating Manuals.
- Interest and willingness to travel to project sites during later project stages is an asset.

Work Environment This role is primarily office‑based, working closely with a multidisciplinary engineering team on a day‑to‑day basis. You will collaborate with different engineering disciplines, engage directly with clients, and interact regularly with shop floor personnel to support fabrication and quality activities. The position involves working with modern engineering tools and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems in a structured project environment. There is potential opportunity to travel to project sites during later stages of projects, depending on your interest and willingness to travel. The work setting emphasizes teamwork, professional development, and ongoing involvement in multiple concurrent and upcoming projects, providing long‑term opportunities for skilled project engineers. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Airdrie, AB.

Pay And Advantages The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $60.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
