GroutLab

Victoria

$30–$38/hour + Performance Bonus | Full-Time | Greater Victoria, BC

A DIFFERENT KIND OF TRADES ROLE

GroutLab is a new specialist residential services company preparing to launch in Greater Victoria.

We're building a professional tile, grout and sealant restoration service focused on excellent workmanship, customer service and creating a better working environment for skilled tradespeople.

We're looking for an experienced tradesperson to become our Founding Lead Technician.

Our work focuses on specialist tile, grout and sealant restoration in existing residential bathrooms and showers — detailed restoration and finishing rather than full bathroom renovation or construction.

You’ll work primarily indoors in customers’ homes, with a predictable Monday–Friday schedule. We handle quoting, sales, scheduling and administration so you can concentrate on doing excellent work.

As our first field employee, this is more than simply a technician position. You’ll have the opportunity to help refine our methods, establish quality standards and, as the company grows, take on greater technical and team leadership responsibility.

GroutLab is currently pre-launch, so further details about our operating model and service will be shared with shortlisted candidates during the interview process.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

$30–$38/hour, depending on relevant experience and technical capability

We are open to candidates from different trades backgrounds. Solid general trades or finishing candidates who require additional specialist training may enter toward the lower end of the range, while candidates with significant directly relevant tile, grout, bathroom restoration or wet-area experience will be considered toward the upper end.

Benefits include:

· Performance-based bonus

· 3 weeks paid vacation

· Company van provided

· Phone allowance

· All specialist tools, equipment and PPE provided

· Paid specialist training

· Full-time, year-round employment

· Predictable Monday–Friday daytime schedule

· Formal compensation review after 6 months

As the company grows, there will be opportunities for the right person to take on greater technical and team leadership responsibility.

THE WORK

Our service focuses on restoring existing tiled bathroom and shower surfaces.

Typical work will involve:

· Removing and replacing deteriorated grout

· Removing and replacing silicone and sealants

· Detailed preparation and cleaning of tiled surfaces and joints

· Minor tile and grout repairs

· Applying specialist restoration materials

· Precision finishing to a high visual standard

· Assessing existing tiled surfaces and identifying when a job is — or is not — suitable for our restoration process

This is not a plumbing role.

We don’t install or repair pipes, valves, drains or plumbing fixtures. The role also does not involve electrical work, framing, major demolition, full bathroom renovations or new bathroom construction.

Where an underlying problem requires a plumber, contractor or full renovation rather than the work we specialize in, our job is to identify that and recommend the appropriate next step.

This is primarily detailed, indoor restoration work in customers’ existing bathrooms.

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR

We’re particularly interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following:

· Tile setting or tile repair

· Grout removal and replacement

· Silicone and precision caulking

· Bathroom or shower tile restoration

· Detailed finishing work

· Working with tile adhesives, grouts, sealants and related materials

Experience in bathroom renovation can be valuable, but this position does not involve plumbing, electrical work or full bathroom construction.

Direct tile, grout or bathroom-surface experience is preferred. However, we’ll also consider exceptional candidates from adjacent trades or handyman backgrounds who have excellent practical skills, strong attention to detail and the ability to learn specialist techniques.

WHAT MATTERS TO US

Craftsmanship
You take genuine pride in making work look right. A clean, precise finish matters to you.

Attention to detail
You’re the person who notices the uneven joint, messy silicone line or imperfect finish that somebody else might overlook.

Problem solving
You’re comfortable assessing existing work, thinking through what you’re seeing and deciding on the right approach rather than simply following instructions blindly.

Reliability
Customers and colleagues can depend on you to show up, communicate and deliver what you’ve promised.

Professionalism
You’re comfortable working independently in customers’ homes and communicating clearly and respectfully with homeowners.

Coachability
You may already have significant trades experience, but you’re still interested in learning new materials, techniques and processes.

Leadership potential
As the company grows, we’d like our founding technician to help train and support additional technicians.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

· Several years of relevant hands-on trades experience

· Strong proficiency with hand and power tools

· Excellent attention to detail

· Valid BC driver’s licence and good driving record

· Ability to work independently

· Strong spoken English and the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with customers

· Professional presentation and conduct in customers’ homes

· Legal authorization to work in Canada

· Ability to comfortably perform detailed floor-level work in bathrooms and showers

Direct experience with tile, grout, silicone or bathroom-surface restoration will be a significant advantage.

STAY IN THE TRADE. LEAVE SOME OF THE WORST PARTS BEHIND.

For the right tradesperson, this role offers many of the things that can be difficult to find in conventional construction or self-employment.

Use your craftsmanship in clean, indoor residential work without spending your evenings quoting jobs, finding customers, chasing invoices or organizing the next project.

You’ll have:

· Predictable Monday–Friday work

· Primarily indoor jobs

· Company van

· Specialist tools and equipment provided

· No sales or quoting responsibility

· No responsibility for generating your own work

· No plumbing or electrical work

· No major demolition or new construction

· Paid specialist training

· A business focused on quality rather than rushing through jobs

· Opportunity to grow into a technical leadership role

We want to build the kind of trades business where excellent technicians can make a good living, take pride in their work and still have a life outside work.

QUALITY COMES FIRST

We’re building the company around doing specialist work properly.

That means careful preparation, excellent finishing, documented processes and avoiding callbacks — not rushing technicians from one job to the next.

You’ll receive paid specialist training in our restoration methods and work with the founder and external technical experts as we refine and document our operating standards.

Because you’ll be our first field employee, your experience and input will be valued as part of that process.

ABOUT THE COMPANY

We’re a properly funded new residential services company preparing to launch in Greater Victoria.

The founder brings business-building and operational experience, while the Founding Lead Technician will play an important role in establishing the technical and quality culture of the company.

Our aim is to build a professional specialist service business with a reputation for excellent workmanship and customer service, initially in Greater Victoria and then more broadly across Vancouver Island.

Because the company is currently pre-launch, detailed information about the business model and service will be shared with shortlisted candidates under a simple confidentiality agreement.

We’re much more interested in how you actually approach detailed work than simply what’s written on your resume.

Our process will include:

1. Short introductory phone conversation

2. Confidentiality agreement and more detailed discussion about the business

4. Paid practical assessment

5. Reference checks

6. Offer
