Position Summary
St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) is seeking a full-time Psychiatrist to join our Mental Health Care team. This is an exciting opportunity to practice in a collaborative, patient-centered environment while providing care across inpatient, outpatient, and community-based settings. The successful candidate will work alongside an experienced interdisciplinary team dedicated to supporting adults experiencing mental health and addiction challenges. About the Mental Health Care Department
The Mental Health Care Department at STEGH provides compassionate, evidence-based care to adults experiencing mental health and addiction concerns. Services are delivered through inpatient, outpatient, and community-based programs that support assessment, treatment, recovery, and transitions in care. Our interdisciplinary team includes:
Psychiatrists Registered Nurses (RNs) Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) Social Workers Occupational Therapists Recreational Therapists Other specialized healthcare professionals Together, we provide recovery-oriented, individualized care that supports the diverse needs of our patients and families. Inpatient Mental Health Services
Our 15-bed inpatient mental health unit provides short-term acute assessment, stabilization, and treatment for adults aged 18 years and older. Responsibilities include:
Psychiatric assessment and diagnosis Treatment planning and medication management Collaboration with interdisciplinary care teams Supporting safe discharge planning and community transitions Outpatient Mental Health Services
Our outpatient program provides psychiatric consultation, assessment, treatment, and ongoing support for adults experiencing acute mental health concerns. Services include:
Psychiatric assessment and consultation Medication management Individual and group treatment support Consultation to family physicians and nurse practitioners Evidence‑based therapeutic approaches, including:
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) Trauma‑informed care Skills‑based interventions
Behavioural Supports Ontario (BSO)
The BSO Team provides specialized support to older adults experiencing responsive behaviours associated with: Dementia Cognitive impairment Mental health conditions Addictions Neurological disorders Psychiatrists collaborate with patients, families, caregivers, and healthcare providers to provide:
Behavioural assessment Care planning Consultation and education Short‑term interventions Transition and discharge support Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess: Fellowship certification in Psychiatry from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) or equivalent recognized qualifications Eligibility for independent licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) Canadian citizenship, permanent residency, or eligibility to work in Canada Commitment to patient‑centered, evidence‑based mental health care A respectful, collegial, and team‑oriented approach, with a strong commitment to collaboration across disciplines Academic and Teaching Opportunities
