GENERAL MANAGER
SALARY – $60,000 – $78,000* PER YEAR, PLUS BENEFITS AND FOUR WEEKS PAID VACATION* COMMENSURATE WITH EXPERIENCE
WHO WE ARE
The Metro Theatre was founded in Vancouver nearly 100 years ago, and has been a live theatre venue for 65 years. Today we are a semi-professional, non-profit theatre company staging seven shows per season; a carefully curated mix of plays and musicals that have led to a 400% increase in patrons in the last four years.
OUR MISSION STATEMENT
The Metro Theatre is an historic building in South Vancouver, but we are about our people. We have a dual mandate, equally weighted and perfectly complementary: to produce high quality, entertaining shows while creating opportunities for those on stage and behind the scenes to showcase their work and upgrade their skills.
We strive for a connected, meaningful experience for our audience, and a healthy process for artists, staff and volunteers so that the Metro feels like home for every theatre lover who spends their valuable time with us.
WHO YOU ARE
The successful candidate will have a genuine love for the theatre, and years of experience working in the industry and managing a team, with a deep understanding of what it takes to deliver exceptional experiences both on and off stage. You have established relationships in the theatre community to recruit theatre staff as needed, and assist show producers to find the rotating paid and volunteer positions we employ on a per show basis – including but not limited to directors, music directors, choreographers, stage managers, set, lighting and sound designers.
You have the financial literacy and computer skills to prepare and track budgets and work with our bookkeeper and administration to assist with financial reporting to the CRA, Board of Directors, financial institutions and grant-making institutions. You embrace emerging technologies and their utility now and in the future in the service of our vision.
You approach your work creatively, but you’re a details person. Budgets, scheduling,
written communication – you have stellar organizational skills. You are a good listener, kind, and collaborative while being driven and results-oriented. You love a challenge, you solve problems, and you get stuff done.
WHAT THE JOB IS
The General Manager leads our team and reports to the Board of Directors, specifically the management committee within. We’re a working board and therefore part of the volunteer staff, as well as being at the top of the organizational chart. It’s a cooperative relationship that is unlike a common corporate structure. Our General Manager hires and oversees our employees, prepares the annual budget for board approval, schedules the facilities and shows, and supports our vision and strategic plan.
Our team consists of seven salaried staff members, most of whom are full time, and an ever changing cast of characters who are paid by show basis, or unpaid volunteers.
There are robust systems and people in place even as there are many areas identified as having room for growth. You will play an instrumental role in building out roles to complement and revise the existing organizational chart.
In addition to the Theatre, there is also a Scene Shop/Rehearsal Hall on Oak Street, the management and maintenance of which also falls under your purview.
As the General Manager of The Metro, you will be called on to make decisions, exercise good judgement, and collaborate with board members on a regular basis. It’s a volunteer board, and while members are experienced, dedicated, and hands-on, the responsibility to run this theatre and our staff lies with you. You will foster a dynamic, joyful and creative atmosphere and further build the theatre’s reputation and timelines are tight, there is an ebb and flow of personnel with each production, and the opportunities and challenges shift as well. The job of leading this theatre into its seventh decade won’t be easy, but for the right candidate, it will be incredibly rewarding.
PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR RESUME ON OR BEFORE SEPTEMBER 21, 2026, TO . ONLY APPLICANTS BEING CONSIDERED WILL BE CONTACTED.
