The Opportunity:
The Teaching Assistant (TA) will work closely with theLanguage Programs Department to support teaching staff and clients. The primaryresponsibilities will include working under the direction of the classroomteacher or LINC Coordinator to improve the language abilities of clients. TheTA may assist the teacher in the classroom or work outside the classroom with asmall group of clients or a single client on tasks and activities to improveclients language skills. The TA will assist the LINC coordinator byphotocopying, laminating or otherwise assisting in the production of classroommaterials.
Key Responsibilities:
Displaysknowledge of the philosophy and teaching objectives of the program;
Establishesand maintains rapport with students. Interacts with the students, asksquestion about them and shows interest. Creates a fun and safeenvironment. Listens, talks and shows interest in them as individuals;
Assistsclassroom teachers by working with students either on an individual basisor within a small group. Checks on students and offers help if needed;
Preparesand duplicates teaching aids and classroom material as required by theLINC Coordinator or LINC Program Manager;
Maintainsrecord and organizes resources, materials and equipment at all sites;
Developsprogram resources under the direction of the classroom teacher LINCCoordinator or LINC Program Manager;
Facilitatesconversation circles;
Assistsin the planning of school events;
Qualifications:
Minimumone (1) year recent and relevant experience;
Experiencein working with clients in a related field;
AdultESL, ELSA or LINC volunteer or teaching experience required;
Stronginterpersonal and English communication skills required;
Knowledgeof multicultural and settlement issues, especially as they pertain toimmigrants and refugees.
