Excel, Data Management & Power BI Consultant
We are Systematix and we are currently looking for an Excel, Data Management & Power BI Consultant for our client.
Our client is undertaking an initiative to improve the efficiency, reliability and maintainability of its financial and operational reporting processes.
We are looking for an experienced consultant with particularly strong Excel and Power Query expertise who can assess and improve existing reporting tools, data sources and processes. The work will include optimizing complex Excel workbooks, improving data quality and management practices, automating reporting processes and reviewing and enhancing existing Power BI reports and dashboards.
This is a hands-on role working with an existing reporting environment, with an emphasis on practical, maintainable improvements and knowledge transfer to the internal team.
ABOUT THE RESPONSIBILITIES:
As the Excel, Data Management & Power BI Consultant, you will:
Review and assess existing Excel workbooks, reporting models and processes
Correct, simplify and document complex Excel formulas and calculations
Improve the structure, readability, controls and performance of large Excel workbooks
Implement validation rules, integrity controls and appropriate maintenance practices
Identify opportunities to automate repetitive and manual reporting activities
Review data sources, structures and reporting data flows
Identify and address inconsistencies, duplicate records, missing data and other data‑quality issues
Clean, standardize and structure data used for reporting
Recommend practical data‑quality controls, business rules and documentation standards
Improve the traceability of transformations and source data
Create, correct and optimize Power Query queries
Structure and improve data extraction, transformation and loading processes
Reduce manual intervention required during report refreshes
Review existing Power BI semantic models, relationships, tables and measures
Review and optimize DAX measures as required
Assess Power BI reports for accuracy, consistency, performance and usability
Improve report design, navigation, indicators and visualisations
Document solutions, data sources, transformations and controls
Develop maintenance and refresh guides for internal users
Provide knowledge‑transfer sessions and support the internal team in maintaining the solutions going forward

REQUIREMENTS:
Must‑have:
5+ years of relevant experience in data analysis, business intelligence, reporting automation or a related field
Advanced Microsoft Excel expertise, including complex formulas, Power Query and Power Pivot
Strong hands‑on Power Query experience, including data transformation and reporting automation
Hands‑on Power BI experience, including data modelling, DAX, report design and performance optimisation
Experience with data cleansing, standardisation, validation and quality control
Demonstrated ability to assess existing processes and implement pragmatic, maintainable solutions
Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills
Strong communication, documentation and knowledge‑transfer skills
Ability to work professionally in French
Ability to work in a hybrid arrangement in Downtown Toronto
Nice‑to‑have:
Experience with financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting or management reporting
Experience within higher education, government or the broader public sector
Experience working with data from ERP or financial systems
SQL experience
Knowledge of Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Services, Dataverse or other components of the Microsoft data ecosystem
ABOUT THE ROLE:
Location: Hybrid – Downtown Toronto
Duration: Initial 3–6 month contract, with potential for extension
Start Date: Target October 1, 2026
Work Hours: Part‑time or full‑time can be accommodated – 20-35/hrs per week
PAY DISCLOSURE:
Compensation for this position is commensurate with experience and qualifications and will be discussed with qualified candidates during the recruitment process.
For transparency, Systematix generally categorises experience levels as follows:
Intermediate: 6–9 yrs: $55-65/hr
Senior: 10+ yrs: $70-80/hr
Final compensation will depend on the successful candidate’s experience, skills, qualifications and overall alignment with the requirements of the engagement.
