Quantum Sensing Engineer Location: Sherbrooke
Employment Type: Full-Time in a fast-growing startup
About Us SBQuantum is a seed-stage startup at the forefront of magnetic sensing innovation. Our vision is to unlock the full potential of magnetic intelligence through our proprietary quantum diamond technology and curated algorithms.
By combining diamond-based quantum sensors with advanced AI-driven software, we transform complex magnetic field data into actionable, high-value insights. Our solutions enable accurate magnetic mapping, navigation and object detection in environments where traditional sensing technologies—like GPS, radar, imagery, or sonar—cannot perform.
From public safety and defence to space exploration, our multidisciplinary team of engineers, physicists, and data scientists is redefining how the world perceives magnetic signals—turning invisible complexity into clear, useful intelligence.
Why Join Us SBQuantum is a fast-growing deeptech startup building multiple bricks for the future of magnetic navigation. At the heart of this emerging capability, the diamond magnetometer vector, compact and accurate readings are key to reach the full tech potential.
This is a unique opportunity to:
Bring your expertise in quantum engineering and physics to push field deployable diamond magnetometry to next level
Work with a team to transition quickly NV physics into prototypes
Deploy novel sensor designs on the field for end-user feedback
Pioneer magnetic navigation for real world applications
Have real ownership and impact in a high-growth, mission-driven environment
Who We’re Looking For We’re looking for a proactive, analytic yet hands-on person who thrives in building structure from the ground up and autonomous in making stuff happen. You bring a pragmatic, solution-oriented approach, with the autonomy and drive to move initiatives forward in a fast-paced environment. You’re combining your expertise in quantum control and prototyping with the team and collaborators to quickly transition bench demonstrations into product features.
Key Responsibilities Lead the development and experimental implementation of high-sensitivity operation schemes for NV-diamond magnetometers — from concept through validated performance on hardware.
Design, implement, and deliver novel quantum control and pulse-sequence protocols, translating operation schemes into robust, fieldable measurement routines and demonstrating quantifiable gains in sensitivity, bandwidth, and accuracy.
Identify bottlenecks, possible improvements to guide innovation and engineering.
Define and execute SWaP-reduction work packages, identifying the optical, control, and architectural changes needed.
Contribute to optical design and sensor photonic integration, leveraging your optics expertise to move from bulk/free-space setups toward integrated,
manufacturable sensor architectures.
Own technical delivery of assigned R&D; projects, driving them against milestones, technical targets, and reporting commitments as the accountable performance lead.
Champion the work both internally and with external partners, coordinating collaborative work packages with academic and industry collaborators, aligning shared deliverables, and serving as the technical point of contact for the sensing effort.
Share SBQuantum diamond magnetometry advancements at international technical workshops and events.
What We’re Looking For 4+ years of experience in a startup environment
Background in experimental NV quantum sensing, from lab benches to devices
Comfortable wearing multiple hats and switching contexts quickly
Strong problem-solver with a bias toward action
Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
Experience with quantum control pulse sequences
Demonstrated impact leading collaborative projects with academia collaborators
Nice-to-Haves Experience in deeptech, hardware, or scientific environments
Familiarity with compliance, grants, or government processes
Bilingual English/French
What We Offer Equity
Flexible hybrid work environment
Prospect to shape both the company and its culture
Growth opportunities as SBQuantum scales
