The Accountant is responsible for supporting the monthly close process, financial reporting, account reconciliations, and compliance activities while ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial records. This role partners closely with internal stakeholders to analyze financial results, maintain key accounting schedules, support audits, and drive process improvements in accordance with corporate policies and Canadian regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare monthly balance sheet reconciliations, profit and loss analyses, and variance analyses to ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial records.
Reconcile and monitor daily bank and credit card transactions and prepare month-end journal entries.
Assist with the month-end and year-end close processes to support timely and accurate financial reporting.
Analyze financial statements and provide meaningful insights and recommendations to support business decision-making.
Maintain audit schedules and supporting documentation for internal and external audits.
Review and analyze general ledger and sub-ledger transactions to ensure compliance with accounting standards, company policies, and internal controls.
Support the integrity of cost allocation methodologies and ensure compliance with corporate and regulatory requirements.
Partner with the Controller to develop, implement, and improve accounting processes, controls, and procedures.
Collaborate with internal teams to address sales tax matters, environmental fees (Eco Fees),
and other regulatory accounting requirements.
Maintain and reconcile prepaid expenses, fixed asset records, and other accounting trackers and schedules.
Track, reconcile, and analyze customer and vendor rebate programs to ensure accurate accounting and reporting.
Identify opportunities for process improvements and efficiencies within the accounting function.
Support special projects and ad hoc financial analysis as required.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
CPA designation (or working towards CPA) preferred.
3+ years of progressive accounting experience.
Strong knowledge of Canadian accounting principles, sales tax regulations (GST/HST/PST), and financial reporting.
Experience with month-end close, account reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statement analysis.
Proficiency in ERP systems and Microsoft Excel.
Solid analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
Effective communication skills with the ability to collaborate across departments.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting audits and maintaining audit-ready documentation.
Knowledge of fixed assets, prepaid accounting, cost allocations, and rebate accounting.
Continuous improvement mindset with experience enhancing accounting processes and controls.
