Reports to: Program Manager

Salary Range: $34.88 to $43.59

Hours: 37.5

Shifts: 8 hour and 12 hour shifts- days, nights, and weekends (as required)

Status: Permanent Full-Time

Position Summary The Sleep and Pulmonary Function Technologist is responsible for the performance of routine tests of pulmonary function (PFTs) as well as studies of overnight polysomnography on individuals with suspected or established disease. Major Responsibilities of the Sleep and Pulmonary Function Technologist at UHN- West Park Healthcare Centre include:

preparing patients for overnight polysomnography tests and collecting data in accordance with accepted professional and laboratory standards.

assisting with patient’s personal care needs during the night which may include physical and mechanical lift transfers of patient to bed and wheelchair, turning, positioning, toileting etc.

applying treatment devices (eg. CPAP, BiLevel PAP, volume ventilators, oxygen) and adjusting parameters through the night based on clinical observations.

documenting observations, recommendations and clinical findings.

performing daytime pulmonary function tests such as (but not limited to) Spirometry, Diffusion, Body Plethysmography,



MIPS/MEPS in accordance with accepted professional and laboratory standards with bronchodilator administration as required.

performing daytime analysis of sleep and pulmonary function data in accordance with accepted professional and laboratory standards and producing timely and accurate reports.

sharing information gathered with patients and their family members, physicians, service coordinators and other interprofessional healthcare team members as required.

complying with hospital and legislated safety standards.

preventing, identifying and responding appropriately to safety and medical issues and emergencies.

Maintaining Effective, Efficient And Quality Service Through

requisition assessment for patient acuity to ensure appropriate care.

equipment set-up, calibration, routine maintenance, troubleshooting, disinfection and sterilization and maintenance of all associated records.

quality control and assurance of equipment and data collected.

clerical duties such as filing, entering data into database and supply ordering.

active participation in departmental/Professional Standards & Issues Committee (PSIC) meetings and hospital-wide committees and policy and procedure development.

collaboration and communication with hospital staff, physicians, external diagnostic facilities and equipment vendors.

obligation of staff to obtain registered sleep and pulmonary function designations within allotted timeframes.

Continuing Education And Teaching

attendance and participation at rounds, conferences, webinars etc.

completion of centre-wide e-learning modules.

teaching Respiratory Therapy, Sleep, Medical and Physiotherapy students in accordance with University of Toronto and Michener Institute teaching curriculum.

educating patients through monthly sleep and pulmonary function talks within the hospital.

training and mentoring of new staff members which includes accountability for quality test data and patient care for up to 1 year.

Qualifications Required (Minimum)

University degree and/or college diploma in Human Life Sciences, Pulmonary Function/ Sleep Technology or equivalent.

Registered pulmonary function technologist or registry eligible.

Registered polysomnographic technologist or registry eligible.

Ability to work independently in a sophisticated laboratory environment.

Strong technical skills.

Excellent communication skills.

Strong interpersonal and teamwork abilities.

Desired/ Preferred

Current BLS certification.

Experience working with people with complex or progressive illnesses or disabilities, including patients with a tracheostomy and/or ventilatory assisted individuals, and individuals with limited mobility.

Practical understanding of mechanical ventilators.
