Weather Observer / Radio Communicator

Location: Conklin, AB

Contract Length: 1 year

Schedule: 4 days on 3 days off, part-time (only working 8-12 day a month).

Position Summary

The Weather Observer / Radio Communicator supports the safe and efficient operation of an aerodrome by providing accurate weather observations, aircraft movement information, runway condition reports, and operational communications. This role serves as a critical link between aircraft, ground personnel, and operational stakeholders, ensuring safe flight operations and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

- Conduct and record weather observations using visual assessments and weather monitoring equipment.
- Provide airport advisory information and operational safety updates to arriving, departing, and transiting aircraft.
- Maintain radio communication with aircraft using VHF communication systems.
- Provide ground control guidance to vehicles operating within the airfield maneuvering area.
- Monitor runway conditions and report hazards that may impact aircraft operations.
- Coordinate aircraft movement information with dispatch, operational teams, and stakeholders.
- Manage passenger manifest reporting and communication requirements.
- Coordinate transportation and logistical support activities for passengers and personnel.
- Assist with aircraft servicing coordination and communicate service requirements to ground support personnel.
- Initiate and support emergency response procedures, including notifications to appropriate emergency agencies.
- Coordinate the issuance of NOTAMs, runway surface condition reports, and operational notices.
- Monitor and support aerodrome security activities and emergency response measures.
- Communicate with maintenance personnel regarding inbound and outbound aircraft to ensure protected airfield operations.




- Collaborate with aviation stakeholders, government agencies, and emergency services as required.
- Perform administrative duties, operational reporting, and record management.
- Provide operational leadership and assume supervisory responsibilities when required.
- Perform other duties related to aerodrome and aviation operations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Knowledge of aerodrome and airport operations, procedures, and safety practices.
- Understanding of aviation radio communication standards and procedures.
- Knowledge of weather observation, reporting practices, and the impact of weather on aircraft operations.
- Understanding of runway conditions, airfield hazards, and aviation safety requirements.
- Knowledge of emergency response procedures and incident management.
- Strong verbal communication and coordination skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced operational environment.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently and make sound operational decisions.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and computerized reporting systems.

Qualifications

Required

- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Restricted Radio Operator License.

Preferred

- Experience in airport, aerodrome, or aviation operations.
- Class 5 Driver's License.
- Flight Services or Air Traffic Control certification.
- Observer Communicator certification.
- Pilot License.
- Flight Dispatch training.

Work Environment

- Operational aviation workplace requiring continuous communication with aircraft, ground crews, maintenance personnel, dispatch teams, and external agencies.
- May require extended hours, shift work, emergency response duties, and additional operational coverage during adverse weather conditions or emergency situations.
