At Little Whispers, we provide compassionate, individualized respite care that prioritizes safety, dignity, and meaningful engagement for individuals with developmental disabilities. We are currently seeking a dedicated Driver/Support Worker to join our team and support a client with Down syndrome who is non-verbal, an exit seeker, and has limited awareness of danger.
Job Summary
The Driver/Support Worker is responsible for transporting and supporting the client safely to and from school, community outings, appointments, and respite activities, while ensuring constant supervision and proactive safety measures. This role requires strong attention, patience, and an ability to respond quickly and calmly in potentially high-risk situations.
Key Responsibilities
Safely transport the client using a company or personal vehicle in compliance with road safety and agency policies.* Provide 1:1 direct support during outings,
ensuring constant visual supervision.* Prevent unsafe behaviors such as running off or attempting to exit vehicles or facilities.* Use proactive behavioral strategies and communication tools suited for non-verbal individuals.* Maintain awareness of surroundings and intervene immediately to prevent injury or elopement.* Collaborate with families and respite staff to follow individualized care plans and safety protocols.* Record and report any incidents or behavioral concerns according to agency guidelines.* Assist with daily living support when required, including meals, mobility, and personal care
Qualifications & Skills
Minimum 2 years of experience supporting individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities.* Valid driver's license with clean driving record; access to a reliable vehicle (if applicable).* Current First Aid/CPR and Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification preferred.* Strong understanding of Down syndrome and behaviors such as elopement/exit-seeking.* Ability to remain calm and think quickly in crisis situations.* Experience using visual communication tools (e.g., PECS, gestures, AAC devices) is an asset.* Patience, compassion, and a commitment to person-centered care.* Ability to work flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Pay: $19.25-$22.23 per hour
Expected hours: 30 – 40 per week
Work Location: In person
